hi everyone,
i have been watching the windsurfers down at the beach and because i love speed i thought this might be my new love.
i know nothing about the sport but am really keen to get started.
any advice will be appreciated

i dont quite get what you mean i mentioned that i dont know a single thing a bout the sport so can someone please give me the first thing most windsurfers learn when just getting into the sport

Step 1. Become a top selling instrumental musician and sell about 75 million albums worldwide (looks like you've got this one covered...)
Step 2. find a place to hire windsurfing gear or borrow some from a friend
Step 3. start on a wide board and small sail on flat water
Step 4. fall in the water lots, get some advice or take lessons.
Step 5. become addicted, base your whole life around wind predictions...

Note: Step 3 would probably be the best way I've seen people start windsurfing.

G'Day Kenny,
If you love speed, then you'll find speed sailing a buzz, It's not too hard to do 30kts, (about 55km/hr), once you get some experience and can find some flat water and reasonable wind.

There are several ways of learning, probably the easiest, is to take lessons on good learning gear, (big wide and stable, it's not good for going fast, so not much point buying it, unless you develop a taste for light wind cruising along the way).

If there aren't any schools near you, then there are books or videos, to learn from. If there's no where to hire gear near you, then either buy something big secondhand and learn to uphaul first, (stand on board and pull sail up with strap, and the conventional method). Or get a board that will be you medium wind board in the future, (about 20litres above your body weight in Kilograms) and learn to beach start (step onto board at the beach using the sail to help get you up) and water start ( in deep water using the sail power to pull you onto the board), on it. This is a harder option and less conventional, (used mostly by wave sailors teaching their mates) but if you're following good instruction can be much quicker.

So a lot depends where you are, and what local support there is.

Now son this is what to do just grab a old long board from the trading post for 150 bucks and go sail on ya farmers dam till ya smiling. dont give up it will take a while but thats what i did find farmer joe and say i am using ya dam for windsurfing buy him some beer.

welcome kenny, i just started windsurfing about a month ago and am totally addicted now, i watch the trees and the weather reports on here daily to see when i can go out and get a sail. got a few good tips on getting started on here and some worked brilliantly and got me over a few hurdles in my first few outings.

the only problem is that its more toys and more money to spend

hey kenny, i loved your movie, great stuff. anyway, you have probably been seeing kiters down at your local. windsurfing is to kiting, is like what boogieboarding is to surfing. ie kiting is the future.

please, do yourself a favour, kite.

Don't be disheartened by the responses Kenny. Like sailing conditions, you have to pick your time to post. Friday night is random night. People on here go to the beach after work, have a good sesh, have a beer, pack up, drive home, have a another beer, put their stuff in the shed, have a few more sherberts, then they get on here !

ive bought this really old kit for $45 full set-up (so what i was told) can someone please tell me all the equipment i need so i can check if i really did buy a "full set-up".

might be best if you tell us what you've bought, or better still post some pics.
Things have changed so many times over the years, it's hard to give a definitive list.

Have you tried to put it all together? That should show you if anything's missing.

i can describe it to you.
most of the sail is a baige/pink (aweful colour,) and a bit of pale green, red and blue.

the best advice i can give you is dont give up. its hard at first but if you stick with it you will reap the rewards, it took me about 5 times out to be able to sail at all, but after a while i got the hang of it and now i only bother going to the bay when its 20 knots ahaha/
just stick at it mate, be stubborn

depends on your gear?
id say about 10 knots would be a good starting point?
i wouldnt go and try learn in less than that, you could probably do 15 knots?

What conditions should you try windsurfing the first time? Light onshore wind. Absolutely flat water. No currents. Warm sunny weather. The water no deeper than a meter. Clear water with a sandy bottom.
