i dont know if anyone else has noticed but those results are a crock!
of in accuracys!!!!
i lost my ankle gadget along with lots of other sailors.. (and it looks like we have been thrown back in to the mix the mix where ever.
i know Tom finished 2 inches behind me and he has been given a DNF!!!

Know what you mean! I finished 12 second in front of troppo and got a dntu! What a Rort! I'm never not turning up again!

how did you loose the ankle gadget it is the most important thing to get the right timing

conditions looked fairly wild? what was it like?

They should just use GPS's and the guy who completes the race in fastest time wins,i'd say there would be an unfair advantage unless your up the front at the start.

Breeze was average, maybe 12-15 possibly gusting to 18 at best I had a meter that showed it was 13 knots as the gun went. Lot of guys on big gear.
Was surprised at number of guys who normally get through easy showed up as DNF. Transponders only Velcro in place.

Yer looked like guys were on big stuff I would have had the 8.5 up in that wind.
Any Idea what size gear Dunky was on.

Heaps of people rigged too big and pulled out.

It felt like 15 knots 2 hours before the start, then picked up to about 20 when the race started.

Even Dunkerbeck said he was overpowered...

He mentioned in the pub he should of been on a 7.8 and a 111

The main reason for so many DNFs is that all morning the breeze had a heap of West in it and was only around 10-12 knots - a classic "Festerly Westerly".

Everyone rigged their biggest kit and jumped on their biggest board and it was looking like being a horrible marginal slog.

Around half an hour before the start though, it kicked up to around 18 knots and went back to the SSW. It still wasn't super-windy but with 200+ board wakes and a sea running at around 2 - 3 metres, it was pretty rough and people were just battling to bear off downwind. I hit a clean 4 metre vertical wave face on one reach out and was flung into the heavens - not where you want to be with a big race sail!

But as far as breeze goes, it was definitely more than 15 knots. At one stage Ben Newson came fanging past me and he was on a 6.4 Koncept.

Personally, I'm pretty confident on the 8.0 up to around 20 knots on the 85 litre Manta 59, so it suited me just fine when it picked up. I only had a small fin so had no dramas bearing away deep.

Loads of people were on gear that was too big for the conditions. I'm convinced that finishing well in the LOC is more about guesswork about what the conditions will be like, rather than outright speed.

Well done Matt and Spotty for finishing with Matt being 8th in the open section.Must have had a weight jacket on to keep up with the big guys

In your case I think your too modest, it was about skills and able to suss the conditions. Very impressed with your placing and with the rest of the team

Hardpole would have been tougher on a 5.8 and a 110. Thought he was under cooked, as he was just chugging on the plane after start but course knowledge showed through with his finish.

Had to feel for Bertie from Wannabees, Bloke had done all the hard training runs and organising down winders and got hit with tonsillitis just before race day

Bjorn was running a 9.6m Severne Reflex on a 121 Isonic, he did mention he was on gear too big..

I was on a 8.5m Overdrive and a 122 futura, well over powered on 90% of the run down to Lano, the chop on most of the coarse was insane on this kind of kit, the run to the 1st mark was hard work and used up most of my energy to stay in control.. the only part of the coarse i was in 100% control was the run from the reef to the finish..

I'm just stoked i finished my first LOC and it's definatly a physical challenge..

Next year if it's windy i'm running Freesyle/Wave gear, there was alot of big jump oppertunities i missed being on freeride gear..

Hats off the the guys who had fast runs...

I think Chris deserves a mention - 46th at 44 minutes is pretty impressive.

I think ankle bracelets arent a great idea for windsurfers . the amount of time I spend waterstarting (kicking) its no surprise it came of. I didnt notice it was gone until the timing girls told me. putting it on you wrist would be a lot more secure.

I know everyone is sick of me saying it BUT "any one you finish is a good one"

Well done Ben - great effort, its not guesswork its well thought out informed decision making. (or in my case just rig your biggest sail).

Wondered if theres a way of having an informal GPSTC lancelin results table, would need people to match sail numbers to team ID's. Just a thought.

What are these ankle gadgets of which you speak?

Hi Notwal,

The ankle gadgets are RFID tags, inside a velcro strap that goes around the ankle. They're worn on the ankle so that the reader (which is underneath a rubber mat) can read them easily as you run through the finish line.

I don't understand how so many people could lose their bracelet, mine seemed quite secure, but I guess anything can happen in the heat of racing!

hmm next year, i know i don't have the fitness to complete the course. i take my hat off to everyone that entered.

I only watched but it was clear the wind picked up considerably in the hour before the race. I was sitting there deciding which gear I would use if I was in it and I kept downsizing as the race time drew nearer.
I'm told the helicopter added an extra ten knots if it was over you.
From talking to people after the race:
7.5 and 100L seemed to be the most common choice of the finishers I spoke to.
The guys who didn't finish mostly had trouble getting sufficiently downwind.

It was so exciting to watch, and the car race back to Lancelin was a hoot too!

I think if the velcro tabs faced forwards into the chop some came undone,facing backwards they seemed OK.
