i have a 11foot6 sup board and want to put a mast track in it and learn how to windsurf.i weigh 110kg.what size sail to buy and want to sail in 10 to 15 kn ots.live in adelaide. does any one know were i can get the sail mast and boom from. thanks

Has the board got a Mast track in it? if not you could end up killing a perfectly good board by cutting into it and putting one in. but other than that that any good windsurf shop down that way will you out with a good rig. Or check out the Buy & Sell section in the above tab.

no it hasnt got a mast track in it.i will get the surf shop to put one in . so what size sail to get. cheers

Firstly I'd not ask the surf shop to do it, I'd find somebody who has proven experience repairing windsurf boards. Juusssst in case they use surfboard repair materials which will destroy your board.

As to a rig, a 4.5m wavesail on a 400 mast (from the SAME manfacturer so they are matched), any alloy boom under 10yrs old, extension and mast base. $600 all up for decent secondhand.
Then as you get used to that in say 5-10kn, after a few hrs sailing move up to a 5m sail on same mast in maybe 15kn.

But be aware a SUP is not ideal as whilst it has plenty of float is has bugger all lateral resistance - a proper learner board with a centreboard (daggerboard, or "keel thing") is 100 times better.

Some SUP boards (like the starboard Atlas) have additional centre fins to assist with learning to windsurf.
Wihtout something to improve lateral resistance, the effort of installing a mast foot could be a complete waste of time.

so, you want to start windsurfing ??
WHY start with a SUP that has no track and probably no "keel thingie" ??
another hurdle - you are a heavyweight like me
personally hate sails in the 4.5 range - do not do anything for me in light winds
as a heavyweight i started with a 7m sail on an old longboard
maybe not ideal, but it worked for me

have you thought about renting equipment ?? IF that is available
also, try courses, if available - you will see what works for you and if you are still interested
without wrecking your SUP nor making equipment investments

Hi,
two places to get gear from around Adelaide. Onboard at the end of Anzac Hwy and Strath windsurf shop at Strathalbyn. 5.5 metre would be about right for cruising round on a long board non planing in those winds. SUP generally don't have a mast track but a thread to screw your mast base in to so make sure your board doesn't have this before you do any mods. Also I wouldn't recommend putting a track into a board that wasn't designed for it.
There is some good info on longboard sailing on the Hot sails Maui website forum.
