just wondering if anyone out there would recommend learning on a formula 167 w board with a small sail to start.
im a surfer and just getting into windsurfing and have been practicing an an old ten cate board that is very skinny and hard to stand on.
to me it seems wide enough to start on and when i advance i can increase the size of the sail ?
any comments would be helpful here

I assume the 167 is the volume.
Thats a great size to start on. A beginner board should be 80cm+ wide.
Start with around a 4.5sqm sail.

The volume is fine, but there are other reasons why a formula board is not a good board to learn on. Formula boards are made only for going fast; they are no fun whatsoever when going slow. They are also much shorter than typical beginner boards, which can make them quite tippy along the length axis. A more typical beginner board will make your learning a lot easier and more fun. Lessons are great, too.

totally agree with boardsurfr.
had a few inquiries from beginners when recently selling a formula board.
had to deter them from purchasing as a bit too technical to sail for a beginner.
and we dont want to scare new sailors away before they really get started.

Agree with the 2 posts above. Also, Formula boards are made light and will not withstand the mast being dropped on the nose or side of the board. Recommend that you don't go this way.
Suggest you look at dedicated learner boards, maybe second hand, so that you can uprate as you get better and not lose too much money.
