I would like to build a board rack for my garage. Wall space is a premium so I don't think I can make a rack that goes lengthwise along the wall. My best bet for optimizing space is to stand the boards on end. I was thinking of a build as shown in the picture below. I'm not sure about the height H and spacing S. Any suggestions? My widest board right now is is 66 cm but it's conceivable that I would end up with an 80 cm board. I figure the depth D could be 3/4 of board width, so D could be 60 cm.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this build? Or ditch this design and do something else? I've modeled this with 25 mm dowels and it's looking pretty skinny and not super strong...

I have done very much the same. The 25mm dowels protrude 45mm and are spaced 35mm apart. I bought some rubber mats from bunnings for the bottom.

What about 33mm OD pvc pipe, or a bit thinner would work.

I made one exactly like this which works good if you have the height, but If you have the wall space I would recommend angling the dowels a bit so that the boards do not stick out as far. I saw a similar one at a windsurfing resort and they had the boards on end but at about 45 deg to the wall so the walkway was not as cramped

Edit: I guess if you have the dowels super far apart you could angle the boards. Also I would generally recommend 8 inch spacing

S is 200mm centres. Works well with wave fins left in, but slalom fins removed.
D is 600mm. My widest board is the Fanatic Falcon at 71cm, but I think D=600 would still work fine for wider boards, e.g. 80cm.
H is 1100 to the centre of the back panel. I decided on an H that will fit between all front footstraps and each deck plate.

How did you fix those joists (if I can call them that), coach screw and glue?

Yep, screw and glue.

My rack. 9 levels. 2 for sails with extra central support & one small for masts. 6 board slots and room for kit boxes on ground below. No boom storage or hanging for wettie or harnesses. That will be Mk3 lol

Built this rack and it worked really well until a few years later when I had more gear than would fit on it. Bit the bullet and bought a trailer. Now the garage is tidier and the trailer offers more convenience and flexibility.
