HI!

Heading to east coast in December. I am going to drive from north to south from January to March. Also keen to visit some islands. What are the wind conditions in that time? What are the must go spots to go? I am into waves and freestyle.

Last summer I was tripping in WA and that was amazing! In WA I mainly used 82 quad and 4.7 blade.

No point coming to the tropics in summer, northerly winds are crap, high chance of rain, stingers in the water etc.
Maybe the sunshine coast as your most northern point, northerlies are good there apparently.

Wind around NSW is predominantly NE that time of year, so if it's windy you'll mostly likely be sailing onshore-ish conditions. Around Sydney try Long Reef or Palm Beach on the North Shore, or Wanda/Cronulla on the South side of the bridge. For flat water fun try Kyeemagh in Botany Bay (it's great fun sailing beside the runway while jumbos are taking off and a very popular windsurfing spot in summer) or Kurnel for bump'n'jump. Head an hour and a half South of Sydney to Geroa for really awesome wave sailing with some great bombies out in the deeper water. Geroa is probably the most popular spot for wave sailing in these parts. Also checkout Corrimal, which can be great in a NE'er. Heading further South, there's plenty of options like Turros Heads, and even Merimbula which is a long way further South. There's plenty of spots, but I'm not a wave sailor so I'm sure others will offer better advice for wave sailing. The NE'er can be excellent in December, just be prepared to sail in messy cross to onshore at many places. Best advice is spend a few days at Geroa, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!

South West Rocks (NSW Mid North Coast) is sweet in the spring / summer nor-easters. Not too many waves though, but there can be at times, and there's usually smooth ramps to jump.

Good point Mathew. For Mid North Coast-which is typically blowing 14 to say 22 knots- I'd say 90 odd litre board and 6 mtr sail is about right. Most lighter sessions though I'm on a 111 ltr with a 6.6. But once around the 20 knot mark, I'll down size a bit. Depends how heavy Kupo is I guess...

I'd reckon that gear sort of narrows it down to Gerroa.

You will need to invest in some bigger gear for the East.

For wavesailing, 5.3 and 4.7 will be spot on for most of the NSW coast in Dec,Jan and Feb.

We still occasionally use a 4.2 down here in Tassi......even in the summer....This vid is the west coast 8 years ago .....it's all sealed roads and Mc Mansions now though..

I can't speak for QLD, but NSW has some great summer windsurfing and the Nor'Easters can regularly blow 20-25knts (that should be heaps for any flyweight). Make sure you spend at least a couple of weeks at Gerroa and you'll go home satisfied.

Whats with the red thumbs don't you want the truth ? SE QLD has great NE from October to December but then transitions to SE so around xmass can be a lottery. Great spots to be had from the Burrum speed strip to lake Cootharaba down to Moreton Bay and the Goldy. Around Moreton Bay great B&J around Redcliffe at Queens Beach (thats my local) or more speed or freestyle orientated down Wello way. I don't wave sail my self but sure that Sunshine Coast and Goldy have great spots. Let us know when you come past

You can't write off central qld. Yeppoon gets some of the strongest NE winds on the coast. When the report says 15 knots, it blows 25. And when it says it's spose to blow 25, you better hold on!! Some flat water around if you know where to go.

what sort of board is that?

In 2004 I did Cairns to Adelaide in two and half month and from mid dec to mid feb. I don't know if it's a similar trip you are going to do but here what I had that time.
I had a surf, a 4.2 - 5-0 and a 78L Waveboard.

From Cairns to Noosa..did not windsurf...at the exception of Town of 1770 or something like that near Agnes Water...had a killer freestyle session! Everhting changed From Sunshine coast. Started with good days of surfing in Noosa Area...windsurf is a bit but don't remember the location...a lot more south with spot like Brunswick Head, Lennox Head, Baron Bay. I had some very nice wave sessions..side shore...a bit overhead 2-3 times per week and I wasn't hunting for wind. I would probably sailed a bit more with a good 80-85L Waveboard. If you have the chance to bring a 100L freestyle or similar...and a 5.7...man you are in business more than your share for seabreeze!

Than it stopped around Sydney not much. However I heard a lot of good comments on the erea of New Castle and Geroa for wavesailing, ..but did not ride there I think, wind didn't worked out. I did liked Sydney even if I'm not a fan of cities!

Started to have fun again around Wollongong....and than I stoped for a while in Torquay(Bell's beach)...and had a BLAST!!! Surfing in the morning, wavesailing point danger in the afternoon...so relax, soo coolll!!! Than hit the road and stop for a while near Robe in south australia...just loved the setup!! Didn't scored big...but when it worked..this is a sweet spot!!!

I average 2-3 times on the gold coast and maybe a bit more in the Melbourne erea, but I was in end of Jan-Feb...might have an impact.

Then hit NZ for 15 days of rain...what a contrast with no rain for 2 1/2 month in OZ!!

It is an awesome video. There were quite a few great vids made around that time by John (still pretty easy to find on youtube) and back even further to the Smackfest era. I gotta say that I was mostly an observer . This vid from even earlier contains quite a bit of footage of Peter V.

whitsun is spot on if its raining its sh#t .you will need some big sails and boards if the wind turns up, only hope is a early cyclone other wise south is better.
