Hi there. I'm back into Windsurfing for past 18 months after a 20+ year hiatus. I'm into the harness and footstraps and can tack ok but still failing on the gybes. I sail in Port Philip Bay where swell always seems to build once you get above 16 or so knots of wind. I'm finding the swell is giving me a fair bit of trouble with my gybes. (for reference I have a JP Magic Ride 109 board, and sails ranging from 4.5 -> 7.5). I'm around 70kg.

I have a significant birthday coming up, and family are asking for some suggestions for presents. I was wondering if there is somewhere accessible where I could do a windsurf experience with consistent wind with potentially some lessons so I can finally crack the gybe. Ideally could hire equipment also so if I need to travel then its simple.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Go on a holiday to sorrento. it was awesome when i was there in April for the youth championship. lacking wind for most of event but i think April was the wrong time of year. However on one of our training days it was really good for us to foil because it was flat and super windy.

Australian Winter - Maui, Greece
Australian Summer - West Oz, Vietnam (Mui Ne)

Plenty of other Euro destinations

The East Coast of OZ is so very dependent upon the Wind Gods playing ball during your vacation window

Hello
two sailing clubs in Sydney offer advanced windsurfing lessons:
1. the Dubroyd Aquatic Club - their next round starts in early October. Best to contact Richard on the website
2. The Woollahra Sailing Club continues their lessons in winter. Person to contact is Gregoire I believe. I was there a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday morning, and there were 4 or 5 guys on Starboard equipment.
Note that both clubs allow you to bring your own equipment if you have already invested.
I sail at both clubs and they are really great locations to continue learning.
It is a bit more challenging at Woollahra with more swell; but the wind tends to be better there in winter if it is a westerly.

and forgot to mention that Richard at DAC also gives private lessons. Might be the best way to get your gybes back on track...
MIght be worth checking with Gregoire. He may well also do so.

I think he is linked to one of the windsurfing outlets in Melbourne, but I can't recall which one and I'm not sure if he is still there. His name is Adrian Rowe. Maybe post in the Vic windsurfing forum. They must know where flat water can be found round Melbourne in most winds

Which Sorrento? Near perth? Looks like its sheltered from the North, so northerlies are consistent there for flat water?

Inverloch might be your best bet

Come and join our Canterbury Lakes Discovery Trip in January/February in New Zealand! It's just a short flight to Queenstown from the Australian Eastcoast. From there on, we take care of everything. Rental gear, transport, food, local knowledge,.. Great small group of like minded people. No formal instruction, but plenty of informal tips if you ask.

If you have really generous relatives and a passport then Peter Hart is doing three consecutive weekly clinics at Pigeon Point Tobago in Jan, Feb 2024. I checked it out this week. Cost about $8k, includes return flights from AUS, accommodation, transfers, gear hire (Fanatic/North) and clinic. Ideal conditions for improving, consistent 15 knots, large shallow flat water lagoon with tuition from the legend with video review etc. it's a hike, but something you'd remember for your significant birthday.
