This is a thread about female windsurfers.

There is very little money in windsurfing and even less in women's windsurfing so there are very, very few professional female windsurfers.

They have the same (often more because it is a male dominated sport) love of windsurfing and this will I hope be a thread where they will be treated not as the same a male windsurfers, but equally. Not judged against the top professional male windsurfers and not judged on how they look.

Katie works long hours as a doctor in Ireland, and windsurfs and SUPs.

We have a young lady down here in Hobart , Karen Robertson, who is an absolute champion windsurfer ,on the slalom board and in the waves,she has been sailboarding for lots of years and sails better than 90 % of the boys, there is about three other ladies that I know of with the passion but time and family commitments hold there progression back,but they all get stoked.
All the boys love to see women having a great time windsurfing, and will always give encouragment to them.
It's a hard sport to get past the intermediate stage but all hats off to girls having a go in this male dominated sport .
I'm SHORE in 10 years or so there will be more women shredders in Tas and in Australia,,,,,, shoot for the moon ladies.

i dont know them all personally but i have seen five regular female sailors, all very good
The female hero at home is Sue
unbelievable spirit towards sailing, a good sailor with heaps of motivation towards enjoying herself and getting better
All the locals are stoked with having the opportunity to share some fun with Sue and just to be engrossed by her fantastic windsurfing spirit

This is a great thread, im tired of everything involving females being reduced to sex appeal for males
Women should be free to express themselves and define the activities merit for themselves!!!!

Maui I reckon it's about 70% males 30% females. But that was in 2000, things may have changed. Don't know how other ladies feel, but I do get really sick of the ladies being treated as sex objects, some ladies probably love it but their usually the ones sitting on the beach not the ones gunning it out on the water

Yep I get a bit sick of women only being viewed for their looks..( As an old duck I don't have to worry about that myself.. ). Used to be 3 girls + me when I used to sail at Nobby's but I rarely see women sailors these days.
It was good to meet the GPS girls at Lake George and meet them through seabreeze and the GPST.

Love watching others ladies sail, nice to see a video completely about a female sailing. The usual videos have 95% men sailing & 5% on the ladies Good reality check too to see interviews of other girl sailors & their lifestyles, makes you realise your not the only female that thinks like that. Down here in Tassie it's very hard to find ladies that think the way you do, plenty of guys you can relate to though. A lot of women down here are gun Mt bikers though.

Karin Jaggi has come back to the windsurfing limelight again after a couple of years away from it and set a new Swiss womens record, beating her old pre-Luderitz world record of 41.2 knots and posting an incredible 44.92 knots!

I've got a "little" girl inspiration here in Sanctuary Point. My daughter Elli is 10 years old and here are some photos of her at Gerroa at the first event of the season for the NSW Wave Sailing Association. My son Alex and I have been teaching a lot of boys over the last couple of years but it looks like this year we might be focussing on Elli's friends and finally have a few more girls out on the water here too. They have been watching her windsurf and now want to try it too!

Be nice to have more pics of your average female sailor ( not top of the pack worldwide sponsored etc) but I suppose a lot of women don't get any photos taken of them.

This is a great overhead shot of Jill Boyer from Hawaii from the 1980s Mistral Naish Gaastra team...her sister was also a surfing champion...I do recall a great lady sailor Julie De Werd (RIP) from the 1980s who I sailed with at main break Margaret River in early 1984. I recall she used Simmer Style fully battened wavesails which were the latest thing back then on Jimmy Lewis boards...She was a top sailor but unfortunately passed away in the US due to cancer. There were loads of great lady sailors in the 1980s Sarah Kenny from Australia, Jessica Crisp (still tops now) and in the US there was Rhonda Smith, Susan Gedayloo(RIP), Debbie Brown, Jenna Severson (De Rosnay) etc........It is good to see from the posts above that there is so much windsurfing athletic talent among the sisters of today...That video above is just amazing..

There are some awesome female sailors in Qld who usually fly past me when I'm sailing.

On the Gold Coast there was a sailor who I knew as Linda that was hit by a jet ski unfortunately. She was awesome to watch sailing with her technique and ability to make it look easy! I learned a lot off her just watching her sail. I hope she has fully recovered and hope to see her sailing again one day! Hopefully the guys on the Goldy might update us if she is on the water again?

im going sailing tomorrow on a young 680 my girlfriend and I own, when I was sailing boards in the late 80s to mid 90 it was on 70 and 65 litre slalom board. Last year I steped back on to a starboard s type and realised i was to far out of practice couldnt even waterstart so got hold of a fanatic viper to scrub up on the basics and get back on the x type . look out lake

Generally girls don't like hard sports. Windsurf is one of these sport. Because too many equipment (board,sail,mast,boom) installing,tuning,carrying all the equipment too much job. Some girls interested in this sport (but not many). For an example I couldn't teach surfing to my wife. She doesn't want to surf. Girls' philosophy is different.

Hmmm... you don't think it was your attitude that put your wife off windsurfing? Generally girls don't like hard/difficult men and will find something more fun to do than spend time with them

I like windsurfing because it is constantly challenging. I am no athlete and I have had to work really hard to get to the level I am at (still intermediate) but I love windsurfing like no other sport. I like the technical aspects and the meteorology and the really hard workout you get, not to mention the speed thrills! I will never get tired of that feeling of being picked up by the wind and being accelerated onto the plane. Thrilling.
