I have a fanatic FSW stubby on order. A 105l. It comes as a thruster with a 20cm centre fin. They say it can be ridden as a single fin.

the fanatic blast 100l has a 34 cm fin. This is fanatic's free ride or "free carve" board.

i am interested to know, if I put a 34cm free ride fin in a FSW will it behave like a free ride board?

why? I hear you ask. Sometimes I want to put my 6.5m sail up and get planning in light winds. The focus being to blast around. I am fully prepared to sacrifice manoeuvrability.

The smallest Patrik freeride is 125L - they see their FSW as the extension of the freeride range in smaller sizes 112L and down. I have often used my 102L with a 30cm upright freeride fin with straps out and back and it goes well, could probably take a 32. I had it out last weekend with a 6.5m NCX and it felt pretty good.

Unless it's got a powerbox then probably not.
The JP FSW have which when used with a bigger 30cm+ fin are good Freeride boards

In a 105L FSW I ran a 25cm wave fin for loose, a 29cm FSW fin (standard) for all round, and a 31cm freeride with lots of draft for early planing / blasting. Very versatile, and none of those setups felt wrong

It has. Center POWERBOX, the sides are 12cm slotbox, to complete the line up.

are you going to change the overall character of the board by a fin ! The outline , foils, area length ?

no, you can alter somewhat the characteristics by doing so. Stating it CAN be ridden as a single fin is a far cry from it now being a freeride.

When you all say FSW, I assume you are all talking about JP boards right ?

I have a 102L FSW board. I have tried it with straps on the outside, 30cm Blackproject freeride fin, and 5.5 Gator as a freeride setup. it's doable, but it's a pig of a setup and just doesn't feel right. However, wave setup: inside straps with a 5.7 Blade, 27cm wave fin, i consider this to be optimal for this board. This setup planes earlier than the freeride setup and it also planes earlier with a 5.3 wave sail. So my tip: don't mix equipment.

I would reckon that BECAME a freeride and BEHAVE like a freeride have the same connotation,
in respect to his inquiry.

Your interpretation of massive may differ from mine, going from a single to a TRI fin setup will change it's feel.
changing the fin or number of fins does NOT ALTER the bottom shape, rails, rockers...on on on, these are built into the board as you well know.



Someone who wants to try this would be foolish not too, I'm not saying some change into freeride won't happen, the shape on this particular board I feel isn't very receptive to that.

havnt ridden the stubby but be riding fanatic freewaves for many years now both single & thruster setup. Most of my sailing on them would be freeride, biggest limitation to bigger fins is if you stick with single inboard straps or double, ive always preferred single strap with biggest fin used 31cm bump n jump fin (basically a bigger onshore wave fin). Biggest sail I have used is 7m but it doesnt tend to give me any earlier planing as it does start to push rocker into water.

In short yeah do it

go for it Yuppy ! just don't land front loops with it cause it really annoys me when you do that !

This is how I set up my Exocet Cross FSW. Select S1 35, double straps, no cam sails. Sail it like a freeride. Goes great for rough water blasting, gybing in swells etc. Magic.

Semantics. Some almost do, and some don't at all.
I was just saying whilst of course it will not become a freeride, don't write off the idea of trying.

I recommend Select. They can be a bit smelly but the performance is first class. I like the S1 for blasting. They gybe beautifully.

Select are rubbish fins.

The MFC LIQUID PRO 34 cm would be fine.

nah they just arent popular with guys that sail into bottom or those under the illusion they get a carbon fin for price of standard select

Have had about 100 of them in 10 years pretty much without fault (touch wood) & performance great provided you get right model to suit you. Biggest mistake i made was moving away from them in buying a set of fins from premium g10 brand, massive waste of money & fragile as, then returned to select.

I have tried fins like s1 in freeride & freeeave boards, personally never liked feel. Select edge freeslam is a great performance fin for these style of boards yet retains good performance in chop, gybing etc.

Unlucky, why did you accept the fins if wonky? Due to not being cnc'd yeah you do have to check before accept as more likely to get moulding into base wrong. But all fins have problems, havnt seen a fin company that hasnt. Pity you write off some good foils due to a few issues.

Also all Selects from my experience require light sand of trailing edge to eliminate whistling/cavitation, better still give the whole fin a fine sand that way you know there are no oils etc that can also cause issues. Select is not only brand where this is good thing.

I updated my slalom & speed fins this year, considered the good & bad of each brand, again I settled on select despite them not being the best value (on vmax's).

Anyway to each their own, back on subject, Yuppy let us know how the fsw stb goes in freeride mode

this Fang is a new composite, with much stiffer material, basically highly refined plastic.
I tested prototypes this spring and found them quite stiff, with some flex , it comes in 34cm .That length for this board seems a bit long,but please compare the area to others in that size.

from MUF, several fins would do nicely, BPF have changed shapes from the ones I have. Makani, from Quebec have some truly innovative fins, some seem dead on copies of what works, which is said purpose anyway.

IM fairly certain that all the above quote is area as well of course the length. It farther like looking at just the quoted volume of a board , and not the length / width.

Exactly my experience on the same board using an S1 35 and 29.

i didn't realise so many people use multiple fins. This will be the first time I try a different fin - other than what came with the board.

the board arrives in a few weeks

Just my two cents l got a quiver of about 50 fins & growing .thats only small by comparison to others!

It'll be like having 1.5 boards for the price of an extra fin. There is no better bang-for-buck than a fin.

You'll find most people have more than one fin for their setups. I have one for each sail.

Then you'll also need one of these, or a milk crate.
