Windsurfing equipment has incredible wind range, so you don't have to stay close to shore in case the wind picks up or dies down.
Watch out, this is misleading. Many people get stuck off-shore by not being aware of conditions such as falling winds. Here I beg to differ, for safety reasons: one must still use the brain.

When the kites are all on the beach, the windsurfers are still out practicing moves or cruising along.
There are heaps of sailors that stay on shore (or don't come out altogether) when the wind is not exactly such-and-such. In fact they go against the grain of the article: unhappy dudes, always bitching at the conditions not being good enough for them. You can also see (read) that all over the various forum. Windsurfing is an attitude, but if some guys ain't happy, it's not always a good one then it seems.
On a more positive note:
Windsurfing is my life. It got me a lifestyle for so many years, lifelong friends in other countries. Heck, it got me kids, it got me serious injuries and surgery, but what the hell... I lived on the beach long enough, workless, that I'll have to make up for it by work later in life, but again what the f.
25 years on, I still teach newbies with the same passion. I still carry a list of moves on all sort of boards and conditions that I want to try. That list is getting ever longer every year - it doesn't matter.
Windsurfing needs not be expensive, I don't feel one bit pressured to have all the equipment the magazines tell me to buy. In fact, I find the constant feel of my 3yo (or is it 4?) board gives me an advantage for my sailing and tricks. Windsurfing is not expensive.
W/S keeps me in great shape. At my age (past 40s), I should have started shrinking and walk funny and all that, but hasn't happened yet. I get out harness-less whenever I can, I find it keeps me on the edge and in better shape. Getting tired is a great way too to practice more moves that rest the biceps. So the best exercise ever!
Everyone else around me has stopped doing sports and activities and passion. There's always an excuse or a reason. But I haven't. I even chose my ex-pat abode here so I could maximise between the 2-3 sailing spots here, depending on the prevailing winds. And I still have a job that I skip in the arvo for when the wind picks up in the summer.
And I love jumping over the kite lines in the water !
