I love my Simmer Blackline but now they have gone down to the 25mm tube for the new models.

Everything I've tried in 24.5 or 25mm has been bendy and I don't like it. Yes, comfy grip but for me I don't think the minor grip comfort advantage outweighs the bendyness.

Ideas?

I can definitely recommend the new Simmer SX10, I can't feel any flex and I'm 110kgs. It's hands down my favorite boom to date.

NP is indeed still 27mm so that's nice to know - but I prefer the newer front end wave shape so not really considering NP

jh, have you given it a good bend next to the old Blackline? I'd be interested to know as other brands seem flexier than the older fatter models of same brand. Maybe I should look at Jesper's one next to mine..... as Blacklines have always been strong but I'd want to test

I'd ask Jesper for a go...I was using the Goya super skinny before getting the SX10 as I liked the skinny booms, SX10 wins hands down for comfort (as mentioned I don't notice any flex).

The GUNSAILS 160-220 Select boom is 27.5mm dia and can fit on sails as small as 4.5m (depending on your sails specs).

Something to consider,
When I am on the Slalom board I use the 200 boom for stiffness and its width. I could be on the 180 boom with these slalom sails and be 100 grams lighter but I do like the strength of the next size up. I am over 90kg.

He has quite a few older carbon booms for sale with the thicker tube. I've sailed a few of them,a bit heavy but they are as rigid as a Maui 190-240.

If you want stiffness as half the population do,choose a longer length boom with and use less extension.

Thanks Peter but not an option as I need 140-190
Choosing longer means I can't use my smallest sail so not helpful.

Duotone = North = grip still falls off? I dunno, but once burned twice shy.....

EDIT: it shows that the Duotone 140 is only 24mm like even thinner most....? but there is also a 27.5mm wave boom. Nice

I've had a North Platinum Aero two for three years now, the grip is good as new after three Maui expeditions and regular use, I do take care of it and I don't offer it to friends to try because I don't want to bankrupt them and cause a divorce

I'm using my first carbon boom, a 27.5 Severne Enigma 160-210 Freemove. The grip and rigidity are superb. But i'm only comparing to old aluminium booms.

If you are ok with the Simmer curve and stiffness is a priority, then the extra half-kilo of carbon in the NP XC Wave is also worth considering.

If you are ok waiting until next season, then the DuoTone is worth considering (I'm guessing that you won't find stock).

Just my subjective assessment of the boom curve. I just made up the three categories, although some brands, like Streamlined and DuoTone, advertise their booms as 'new school' curve. I find the 'new school' curve more comfortable to use as the front hand is closer to your body. After using the 'new school' for a few years, then back to 'old school', it feels like an extra stretch with the front arm with the 'old school'.

The 'with grip' or 'without grip' is a combination of either clearly advertised specs, my subjective assessment from trying the booms, or actual measurements. So no guarantees with that info in all instances.

24mm convert here and probably too light to notice the extra boing
Surely the 3mm weight saving could be offset with beefed up tubes ? Dunno can't find a video of carbon boom manufacturing , plenty on tennis racquets .
Maybe they could steal Starboards " carbon innegra rail band " for " core structual stiffness " and make everybody happy

I did wonder the same without knowing and had a closer look.
So this measurement must be the tube without the grip.

It is specified as 25mm on the Simmer website, so seems like 24mm without grip and 25mm with grip based on your updates.

I probably should have put the Severne Enigma in the 'Old School' group not the 'Very Old School' group. A few comparison photos with the Streamlined here ...

However I think your diameters are way off......... eg Duotone clearly states 24mm tube on their site and you say you assume that diameter is with grip.
The Enigma wave is a 25mm tube, not 25mm with grip. I know that as I recently had to use the end clips from Severne on another boom and measured with verniers.

Seems the standard for booms is to advertise the actual tube diameter not with grip.

Thus I don't know how many of the diameters you give are accurate.

Hmm .. good point.

Note that it is only the new DuoTone MegaSlim boom is 24.0mm tube. The other DuoTone wave booms are thicker. But agree with your point.

Streamlined is 27mm excl. grip.

Maui Sails is with grip.

Simmer seems to be with grip based on feedback above.

North is excl. grip.

Neil Pryde is excl. grip.

I called Mark from SSA about a year ago and he measured the Streamlined and Goya with calipers. Should have kept those notes. Never bought either btw.

I have some calipers arriving soon, so can update the thread with a few contributions of actual measurements in a week or two. This thread can be the world repository for accurate information.

We measured some a little while back.
The dia stated by brands is usually tube dia not grip:

Would the weight be you pulling against a 5m sail in 25 knots in logo high waves with a go pro mounted to the end of the boom with a scale drawn on the lense. This approach could probably take the rest of the season and several winter fronts to complete an accurate studdy.
