Tried cleaning the underside of my board with car polish but didn't get a good result. Wanted something shiny to look like new. Got it to repel water which I think is a good thing, but leaves the board all marked.
Should I be using car polish at all??
Anyone tried anything different or am I just being a fussy old bastard....

Cheers

I did once experiment on my 130 Fanatic to check which surface is better for the board.
- sand the bottom to the quite rough mat finish
then
- apply glossy white paint

i don't have definite answer myself, but there must be somewhere accurate scientific research result for this intriguing question.

What is the lower resistance surface for our board:
- absolutely glossy ? when water could flow in undisturbed laminar manner ? but make 100 % adhesion to surface
- rough - where water molecules skip over surface limiting surface area contact ?
- hydrophobic - where molecules are actively repel off the surface ?
- maybe some composite micro structure like shark skin ?
- future possibly belongs to the super-conducting-magnets that repeal water implanted into board- but there without any other changes we could not keep balance with absolute zero resistance

Gumption(bathroom cleaner) works a treat on any smooth board surface, comes up like new, is easy and doesnt sand away your board

What are you using to apply the Gumption? A nylon scouring pad?

The grey 3m pad (fine) is the goods, can use it multiple times. I used to buy them by the carton for 2-pack spraying joinery, sanding between coats.

+ 1 for Gumption. Use a cloth. No need to scour.

Go to a boat store, get the boat polish for fibre glass and epoxy..... its the right stuff to use, purpose built for cleaning boats and the like.... finish comes up awesomely.... and protects the board, not just cleans it....

ld want to know what the surface is your trying to clean, fibreglass gel coat, acrylic lacquer or plastic?
are you trying to remove dirt imbedded in scratches? how deep are the scratches?
all these questions need to be answered before I would touch it with anything!!
Hitting it with wet n dry could leave a cloudy finish that may attract more dirt unless its sealed.I have repaired surfboards for years and do use wet n dry to remove scratches(grade of wet and dry depends on the depth of the scratches, grading from maybe 400 down to 1200)then seal it with spray coat of acrylic lacquer, then wet n dry that followed by polishing with cutting compound. This gives you a shiny sealed finish. My 2x bobs worth
