I have picked up an Angulo Sumo 125 to extend my TOW in these horrible in between seasons but it has been a long time since I had a freeride or slalom board.

I intend to get a 7.5 - 8.0m (closer to 7.5 probably) to try and get out on the 15kn days.

The supplied fin is 34cm which I thought a bit small?

One fin calculator online shows 37-41cm, another shows 45cm.

Neither take into account tail width, only board width, which is weird.
board is 259 x 69. Tail width is 44cm at the 30cm point

I am 95kg so 1 or 2 cm bigger than what other people use is probably better than 1-2cm smaller?

What do you reckon on fin size?

get a decent 38 or 40cm slalom fin preferably a carbon one

Yes carbon, cos as I said, when you get the tom tits with it, you need to give it to me

G10 will be fine just not as good as carbon

Doesn't help much here but I just used exactly 34 cm fin with my Naish 110L board and 7.4 m sail in recent gusts up to 30 knots..
yeeee I know what you are all going to say but that is exactly what I love about this setup ... I could go and survive sudden gusts because my fin is not that big at all ... I am possibly the last to get planing in light winds but my upper range is also impressive with proper down and outhaul.

I'm (nearly) the same weight as you Mark and I use a select slalom 40 with my 122 futura and rss mk3 7.8, winning match !!
(early plane and full on til top speed)

I would go at least 42, freeride fin is swept back and gives you a little less lift, plus you want it for lighter conditions, you are not going to get overpowered. I had 44 with Carve 135, perfect with sails between 6.6 and 8. I looked at that board as well, would have got it if didn't live in Sydney..

My 125 Tabou rocket 245 x 69 wide came with a 44cm freeride fin that I use with my 6.6m..I don't have any larger sails..

I weigh 80kg and use a 40cm fanatic fin on a 125L ray with 6.6, and a 44cm FO Nitro with 7.8 - which works really well and feel it gives better upwind performance. Using the 40cm with the 7.8 tended to spin out if pointing up wind and hit a lul - probably due more to poor technique.

I am of similar mass and have a couple of fins for my 124 L Sting freeride (73 cm wide):

1) A Select RS7 (a quite upright Slalom style fin) - this generates heaps of lift and gets you planing early and sails great upwind - Doesn't turn tight but very stable on turn - If you get overpowered though this fin generates too much lift and is very hard to control board.

2) A Makini 40 cm Freeride fin (slightly raked typical freeride fin) - I reckon this takes 1-2 more knots too plane - is more responsive on turn - goes upwind OK but nothing like RS7 - haven't had it really overpowered so can't compare with RS7

I normally sail with with a 7.5 m and can get up and planing about 15 knots.

Hi Mark - I found this post after doing a google search for fin sizes.

You recently help with advice for my new gear, I got myself 2006 Starboard Carve 122 and a 2012 Funster 144.

I am a relative novice and have just started using the carve; it came with a drake 380. Given that I too am 95KG and the wind strength here is average around 15-25 Km I am thinking I also need a larger fin.

What size did you end up with? How big do you reckon I should go for on mine.

Unfort threre are no windsurf shops around for me to demo fins.

Im about the same weight and on my light wind gear (Falcon 125 with 7.8 or 8.6 race sail) I use a 44cm C3 Sting. Lots of power for early planing and lift but super controllable when/if the wind picks up. With modern wide boards you are out on the rail so can hold it down.

I've only been out twice on it and haven't been close to planning. I am probably under sailed as well; the largest sail I have at the moment is a 6.2.

I found this site http://www.riggeek.com/gear-calculator/for-windsurfers

which suggests Sailoardfin size relative to weight and wind speed - based on 95KG and wind range between 15-25 Km (on average) it suggests bigger sails and fin than I have.

Of course my skill level would be one part of it and also the rigging.

Another question - what would be the optimum mast position? Centre/forward /rear ?

I have a 120 and use 38 & 42 cm fins, Freerace type(a bit more upright then freeride). They seem to cover the whole wind range for this board and sails from 7.2 to 8.5.

Okay - sounds like I need to get a couple of larger sails; which will require a longer mast and maybe a bigger boom. OMG there is so much to learn about gear.
