I'm aware that this type of thread has been posted before, but I believe that some of the responses were misleading...

Has anyone found an insurance policy that will cover all your equipment? I'm getting desparate.

Don't be too quick to say yes. Often the insurance companies will say "oh yeah, thats sporting equipment" but hey don't really even know what windsurfing is. In my experience, any company which offers boating insurance will not cover your sailboards whilst at home. They class them as boats, and hence you need a separate policy.

Every company I've rung has said "yes" to windsurfing equipment, but if you dig deeper and ask about "sailboards" you will get the truth.

SGIO/GIO = not covered
QBE = not covered
ALLIANZ = not covered

I suspect they are all underwritten by the same re-insurance company, hence all their policies are the same.

I'd love to hear from those who know for sure their gear is covered.

I believe that some of my gear is insured under Suncorp. I think it is an extra cover, and they ask you to nominate the items and the value. They are covered if stolen from a locked vehicle or from home.

I can't say for sure it is covered, but to the best of my knowledge it is.

hmmm interesting, i've asked GIO numerous times whether my sailboarding/windsurfing gear is covered in the garage..... and because they have always said yes I've been using them for house insurance for the last 5yrs.....

GIO is good, using your home insurance, whilst the gear is on your premises ONLY !!! Not covered away from home, in the car, whilst using... not sure if this is what u meant Porka?????

No maximum amounts either

And thats covered for theft / fire oh yeah and accidental damage ,...should you snap the board in half after a flat water landing in your swimming pool

Being in WA I think we only have access to SGIO. They are a definate no when it comes to contents insurance. Its outlined in their PDS which they sent me. It's bloody irish that it puts sailboard in the lists of things which aren't covered...like boats, boat parts, boat trailers, SAILBOARDS... it seems totally random. Will we need a skippers ticket soon?

I assumed that SGIO and GIO were one and the same...but perhaps no.

I am with ING and you had me worried so i went and phoned them just now to get a good explanation and understanding!

My gear IS covered as sporting equipment, and i did ask 3 times and tell them it was windsurfibg, sailboarding, boating equipment so i made it very clear and they still said yes - with them - it is covered under sporting equipment!!

However, it is only covered for $3000 so if it was worth more then it would have to be put down as a special item - as it happens i bought most of it second hand and it cost just about $3000 so no need to worry, but i did start asking questions about other items and it was explained to me in great detail what is covered and how they value items, item limits and payouts etc, and this is not to clear on my actual paper policy.

When i read over my policy, (as i always do with care) i was quite happy with everything, and confident that i knew what i would get for various items. However, they have written it very cleverly to make me think that so i am extremely glad i spoke to them in depth just now, as i have a deffinate idea for every items value!!!

They even upped my contents value by $10,000 for no extra charge!!!!!!

So thanks for your thread - people beware!!!!!

SGIO are part of the IAG group, which also includes NRMA and CGU.

Maybe it's time to look at other companies and check their PDS online.

you can get contents insurance for windsurfing gear through QLD Police Credit Union (QPCU), and no, you dont have to be a police officer or even a member of the union.

You do have to list each item you want insured specifically and pay a premium based on the value of the equipment.

I know a guy in my street had a board that snapped after falling off the garage wall racks during a big storm , he was paid out straight away but not sure who he was with. Will certainly ask him and check with my own insurer.

HBF - personal valuables, extension to contents insurance.

Each item listed separately - so they can't say they didn't know it was windsurfing gear when the policy says "2007 powerex RDM mast - 400".

Category of sporting equipment higher than others, so make sure you mention that on phone.

Also good for bike.

Can't comment on the claims process - thankfully haven't had to try it yet.

Obviously read the policy documentation.

Everything insured with GIO,House,contents,cars and windsurfing gear.
Windsurfing gear all listed as separate items,as are antique funiture and antique jewelery.
Made 2 claims in the last 5 to 7 years with no probs at all.
They were happy to insure windsurfing gear for fire theft etc on the property and locked up in the vehicle.They wouldnt insure for damage which is just fine by me as that is self inflicted and I can bear the less than $500 costs myself.
Their insurance wasn't the cheapest but I figure you get what you pay for.
3 claims, forgot about the $6000 damage to my wifes car.
