Hi all, new member here and returning sailor after 20 years. What's the go with taking a sailing trip to WA from the east coast? Do people fly their own gear over or do they hire gear or do they drive their own gear over or do they buy some and sell when they leave?

The only windsurf holiday i know of is the Cocos island run by 2nd Wind.

Depends how long you are here for.
Plenty of good 2nd hand gear here on seabreeze.
Lots of shops with 2nd hand and new gear.
Not a lot of rental options. There is someone advertising on Gumtree. Some equipment on the river at Peli Pt.

Not for a few years now, but I've flown Virgin Cairns to Perth about a half dozen times with one board and two sails. At the time Jetstar couldn't take gear but Qantas could, things might be different now. Get on the web sites and make a couple of calls.

I have family and friends in WA so transport and Accommodation were easy. I did drive once but I was on long service so plenty of time, if you have the time that's the go

I hired gear from Second Wind in early 2012 - they were fantastic. May well be worth a try!

Qantas and Virgin Australia charge $35 a bag if you book it before the airport. We have been travelling with gear for ages, and so far there has been no major damage. Sometimes small dings or holes, but generally it gets treated well.

I guess it gets easier the more people you have as you can put all the masts into a mast bag, all the booms in a boom bag, and sometimes share the sails around.

Years ago when everyone was charging per kilogram for excess luggage, I even couriered over my sails to save money, but as long as the charge per item is reasonable, flying over is pretty easy.
