Ok, I've read 100 threads on separating two piece masts, but today when I was packing up, my boom would not come apart. One side simply has no movement at all. I guess some sand blew in?

I'm looking for inventive ideas to get it apart.

Alternatively, if someone can arrange winds in Sydney to suit my 4.7, that will do just as well.

If it is an alli boom try pooring a bit of vinegar in the end as it may be alumina oxide crystallization which is holding it. I've heard the vinegar will dissolve the crystallization.

Not sure what brand or type of boom it is but if you can remove the locking assembly, slide it back out of the way, then pour some boiling water down between the arm & extension.
Let it soak for a couple of minutes then put your foot inside the extension and pull the stuck arm, the other should move by it's self.
If it's still stuck try the vinigar or CRC and repeat the back breaking bit.
Last resort would be to lightly hammer (with a soft mallet) around the arm where they are stuck, if it's sand it should crumble enough to release.

Don't hammer a Carbon Boom, all the other options should be ok though.

Nothing wrong with fixed length booms anyway

A couple of my booms have recently been able to take themselves apart.....mid sail, and not on the extension either!

hook the boom end to the horns of the old toyota land cruiser and simply pull it with malice that's all too itlet's see who's stronger sand, salt or muscle and bones..[}:)]

Its brand new, has only been used twice, and I always pull my gear apart, rinse it well with fresh water, and store it in pieces. So it's not aluminium oxide stuff.

Could only be sand. The soft mallet idea looks like the only chance.

Hmm, just had an idea that involves a 6ft length of 4x2 and a car jack.

I wrapped my boom around one of those log car stoppers in car parks, anything to will fit half nicely inside the boom and wont move

Hee hee, finally got it open. Yes, it's a Toyota car jack.

Harrow, so what jammed it so you needed a jack to get it apart

It was sand. While taking a break I had left my gear sitting on very fine dry sand with a southerly gale blowing and it must have blown in. I normally would not do this but the tide was really high and coming in so there was no area of damp sand. It surprised me though - I couldn't get the slightest bit of movement or twist in any direction.

What I would like to know is why you have your harness lines facing inwards?

Do you sail inside your boom?????

Harrow

Soak the boom in fresh water for a few hours.

This Should help.

Once you get it apart, rub some nice fresh vegetable oil on it, and it will be slippery for a season or two.

Hope this helps

Stewie.
