Certainly never set strap so loose your complete foot can slide through, this will surely break something if it happens in a big stack.
wave riding, I like my rear strap loose enough so I can get enough toe pressure on the inside rail to carve a bottom turn. Speed sailing I like them a bit tighter.
Some straps have stretch coupled with slippery pads and crazy chop...
Mine can be considered loose but leaning against the front of the strap gives me a nice and tight connection with the board.
