Anybody designed something to transport your gear that makes best use of the small space in the back of a station wagon - especially something removable. I was thinking of simple racks but doing this is not up my alley.

Everyone I see has those plastic bins that they have all they're gear stored in. Dead easy to take in and out. What else did you have in mind?

Harrow I use the bins for small stuff, i was thinking of racks for say 3 boards.
The way I lay everything in seems so inefficient plus when I swap gear over during a session it's a mess. Mineral gave me an idea using PVC pipes.

Can you elaborate on the PVC pipe idea. Even though I have a van I still throw all my stuff in a big heap in the back, always thinking I'll get around to making racks but never seem to. I'm imagining a row of PVC pipes, one for each sail, and another for masts.

What sort of wagon do you have?

For a van I think the best setup is a false floor.

Sails, booms and masts all go under, boards on top. Then if you get keen build racks for the boards and you have the full van floor space free while still carrying all your gear. I had this setup in a few vans and spent many nights sleeping in there on windsurfing trips in total comfort.

I haven't ever seen anything done in the back of a wagon, they never seem long enough to me to do much with.

noticed the local pool shop has approx 20mm diameter PVC pressure pipe that looked fairly rigid. the local hardware has the T pieces to connect pipes. I would like to fit 2 boards on to 2 racks that in my mind would look like a rectangular prism leaving space for 1 board on the floor of the wagon. Sails booms bins etc down each side. My boards are short enough to fit this configuration if I ever get to make it. I have a commodore wagon. ps on a different note I use sections of cut down metal fencing on their side to make perfect racks under the house.

I have worked with surveyors before who have station wagons with a marine plywood fit out in the back of it, designed with a false floor an compartments. I looked at these straight away and thought it could be well applied to windsurfing storage and transport. They are lined with soft rubber carpet lining to protect the gear.

20mm pipe will probably be too flexible and bow when you put any weight on it. Go to your local electrical wholesaler and use underground conduit as its heavier duty ..maybe 32mm or 40mm dia. You can get elbows and tees etc and probably at a better price than pool shop lol

i'm sure someone once posted a photo of a station wagon on Maui with PVC pipes as racks. It looked really good and was easy to remove if you ever wanted to transport people!
