Loop the rope near the surface in 12" dia loop and tie up as much rope as possible near to the float, the ideal length of rope left is where the float is directly above the pot.
We have an incredible amount of cray pots at our local some of which are right in the wave riding zone. This is an effective method for annoyingly long ropes (some 20+m of floating rope)
The other alternative is using weed fins just slide straight over them.
