it looks like slapper is a term used to distinguish windsurfing (board, sailor) from foiling.

do folks that windsurf old school style (only) call it slapping, slappers etc, or just the foilers?

do local windsurf shops or industry refer to windsurf boards as slappers ?

I'm quite old, does that make me an "old slapper"?

We call them that cause thats what you get at the local when they see you pull the foil board out.

It's entered the colloquialism. Who's claiming credit for first usage? Someone from WA?

Its certainly what we call them here. Can't say for sure though.

I think Stroppo was the first person i heard say it.

Own it Snides !!
It's become one of those reverse racism things.
Only Slappers can call each other Slappers.
If anyone else says it, it's offensive!

Snides for governor!
Fly your windsurfer over 3 windwaves and you discover...flying the fin.

Yep, Pretty sure Tomski or Snides came up with it.

The context of it is not normally referring to other windsurfers, but ourselves when we go out on our normal windsurfing gear, as in
"I'm going for a slap tomorrow if the winds up"
"Going out on the slapper"

It's not derogatory, it's a fact!

Which until you foil you don't realize how harsh a normal windsurfer is (even a free ride board with the perfect fin in) you can have the junkiest day and still feel like you are standing on an air mattress (but nowhere near as boring).

Still got my slapper's, ain't getting rid of them any time soon.

Ok I have done some research
using snidesapedia
and have found the following
first mention recorded
was the term Slap on 28/10/17
by..........Darryl Griffiths AUS049

the first time the term Slapper was used in full was at 8:48 on 3/3/18 also by Daz!!!

personally I actually use the term as a derogatory remark!!

I guess if you're cruising around at 8knots in an almost sensory deprived state on an almost-unmoving board, you have time to daydream about names for the other disciplines.

I just assumed a slapper board referred to a traditional sailboard because when your planing, it slaps across the water like it's being spanked. The sail is also twitching because of the slapping across the water. With foiling, no slapping or sail twitching is going on, just smooth air sailing.

Up here people seem to use "foiling" and "finning." At Roosevelt I foiled in the morning and finned in the afternoon.

We need more slappers in windsurfing, and by that I don't mean boards with fins attached..
