because it was designed for heavyweight wave sailors doing bump and jump. the new models lost their wave orientation but looking at them they still look very similar to the old design in the head. I have used kults since around 2002 and stopped replacing them when they got more freeride focused because they gradually got more and more rigid.

on the water kults feel heavy when underpowered because they are not a dynamic sail. That plus the high skin tension when combined with an sdm mast translates to rigid. it's not designed to be a lightweight light handling sail for light winds. for heavy sailors in good wind it's a great blasting sail. at speed it's stable and can point to windward really well plus take a beating.

the old ka kaos was a much lighter handling sail on an rdm mast. kinda chalk and cheese really.

regardless of brand. At your size it would pay to focus on brands that make lightweight sails for lighter sailors.

I dont think that is true re "designed for heavy weight" - AFAICR it is designed for the "average weight" sailor, which is 80kg.

I have a 4.7 Kult sitting on the floor beside me from 7 yrs ago - it was a great sail, having died last summer when a human went through the window. I also have a 5.8 Kult from 2019 - the newest model feels similar to the older model.

I am 69kg and have used Kults extensively - including the era of the square-batten which had an incorrectly ground batten-tip. Apart from the incorrect grind, the sail definitely had more lower-end power than an S1 or Blade, but it was also lower-top-end (gps tested).

I also use the old Kaos -> the Kult/Kaos combo was good for light-wind and high-wind, with the former giving more low end power. The older Kults did require a bit more downhaul than the new Kult -> I did use a Kult 4.7 from 4 yrs ago, just this weekend - it does need about 1cm more downhaul than a modern kult... aka more skin tension.... thus confirming the Kult isn't a pure wave sail.

Kults from every year I have had them, shouldn't be sailed in overpowered conditions - it would be better to use a smaller size.

Maybe you are thinking of the Killer ?... which - in my opinion - is definitely not suited to anyone under 80kg. I use the Kamakazie and Kult specifically *because* they suit my light weight.

Just need to clarify..... Back in the Day the Kult and Kaos were the 2 Wave sails, the Kult being the Power Wave option. Kult has now morphed to a high wind freemove sail and has 2 tube battens. Kamikaze 4 batten and Killer 5 batten now fulfill the Wave roles. I feel a current Kult would be a good option Sue but your question was about Severne Sails. I haven't used a Severne since my 2008 Blade which I rated highly.
PS Kult and kamikaze merge into I split range for 2020...the Kross. Kross X in the smaller sizes, full mesh construction for Bump and Jump and Kross S a blasting camless in X and mono combo.

NCX sails are a great basic sail (they're all I've got, except for an old North wave sail for high winds) but the Gator would be way better for strong winds, rough water and B&J conditions simply because they're heaps more robust than a NCX. The Gator may not be as tuneable and will be more off/on than the NCX but I reckon it will last longer in rough water.

not much doubt severne make excellent lightweight sails.

look at the pwa. severne is consistently at the top.

the gator is a contender if the boom cutout works.

couple of 12yo kids on the goldy are absolutely blasting on 5.5m severne cam sails and most of the lighter guys i know like severne.

she can also pick up a 2nd hand blade or s1 for $150 and give that a go. the s1 has a low boom cutout as do the slightly older blades. grab a suitable rdm mast that will allow smaller sails too and for a small outlay she has a great setup that can move into the future.

duotone also make lightweight gear. she needs to try some lightweiggt wave gear before buying to see if it works for her.

Hi, i am 65kg and use 6.5 gator. Its very easy to move around and easy to control on gusts as power pulls low below in a progressive way, you can have a locked in stance but its very easy to depower as you like. It has huge range (I kind of jump directly from 6.5 to 4.7), easy to rig, light and tough. Its not good at lulls but its light so you can pump without too much effort. Shape of gator changes from wave to freeride at 5.5.

I never used ncx but i think they are more for speed freeride rather than b&j. They have 7 battens compared to 5 on gator, therefore significantly heavier. Should feel harder to move around, but more locked in stance, better at lulls and faster.

Blades on the other hand compared to gator feel less locked in, more twitchy and on/off), power pulls higher and as a light person i feel less secure when i am overpowered so i feel it has less range. It is as tough and even lighter. It feels more rewarding if wind is just right and not too gusty.

Thanks. I have a 2015 7m NCX which is good in consistent wind but I find not as good when it's patchy and gusty.( That's compared to my Overdrives and Turbo).
The board I will be sailing is a waveboard and really for 20kts plus . I really like it though which is why I want a setup for patchy 10 -20kts..Sounds like the Kult might be better for that as long as it doesn't overpower the 23cm fin ??

True, compared to a cam sail like Turbo or OD, the gator definitely looses in lulls, thats very noticeable but is the same for every b&j or wave oriented sail. But when recently comparing the Gator to a NP Combat, I felt the Gator had a better profile and went longer in gusts.

Generally with such sails you need to adjust your course and go a bit more downwind in lulls.
Thats definely something sboardcrazy should know :-). But with the next little gust, you are up and flyingg again without effort with a Gator.

I was on and off the plane but you can see the tracks wobbling as I go off the wind to get going and back up again..almost like foil tracks..

No, the Freek is just fine for what I use it for. I have other sails when I want to go fast or want to sail overpowered. The first time I tried it, I was actually way overpowered, and thought it was behaving fine. The Freek seems like a great sail for old school freestyle and switch ducking, based on a couple of sessions so far.

The point I was trying to make is that a new sail may need a few sessions to figure it out, and adapt to it. I know I will need a few more sessions just to see how different trim settings affect it.

When it comes to FS sails I only have an Avanti Echo to compare to. The backhand starts pulling when it gets overpowered, but it doesn't try to catapult you. It has probably a bit less bottom end, but way more top end. AFAIK the freek is based on the old 5-batten S-1 design, which also had a lifting tendency to keep you "on your toes".
