Hi All,

Just curious to know if anyone has rigged severne overdrives (or any cam sail) on a severne redline RDM mast? Wondering if cam rotation has problems or sail doesn't rig properly? I think severne replaced redline with enigma later and latest OD should rig on enigma RDM.

Not answering your question, but I recently bought a new model OD6.2 and asked for a matching Blueline RDM from my supplier [name redacted]. When the package arrived I found my supplier had sent me a SDM, and after a bit of too-ing and fro-ing I kept it anyway.

On Severne's website they had said that either are fine.

The point is that Severne's website says it should work regardless on either type of Severne mast. depending on the age of your OD, things might have changed.

My OD (brand-spanking, it came still shrink wrapped) had no cams to change over, so I'm still a bit mystified as to how that would work. But I admit it's hard to imagine that the cams would sit equally well regardless of mast diameter...surely there's a difference in cam tension between riggind on a SDM and a RDM?

Probably just adjust the number of spacers to suit either mast.

I changed the cams on my 5.6 OD to rdm cams, didnt try it with the sdm cams it came with

I have the Severne rdm cams (which are red) and the sdm cams (which are grey). If the sail only came with the sdm cams, you will need to swap them over.

What no one has ever been able to explain to me is how Monty Spindler can design the Loft Racing Blades to be compatible with either SDM or RDM masts very successfully but not one other brand (please correct me if wrong) has their top end slalom / speed sails interchangeably compatible (only in sizes smaller than 6.0). I use RDM's right up to 8.6 and whilst the RDM does change the lower end performance (acceleration) due to less stiffness the upper end performance is only ever so marginal. After many SDM breakages I changed over to RDM without even having to buy RDM cams for my sails (Loft supply both with the sail)

Recently I was looking at getting a 2nd hand 7.8 OD but the dealer said it would not work with an RDM (contrary to Severne's marketing). That and the cost of 3 RDM cams ($90) to change over didn't really appeal to me. Would be interested to know if anyone sails the larger OD's with RDM too.

KA Koncepts rit on SDM and RDM. KA will,provide cams to suit your intended masts. I rigged my 7.0 & 6.4 Naish Bullets and 5.7 North RAM on a RDM mast.

Yeah but no...they're not KA's top of the line sail. The KA Race is and it doesn't take RDMs. Also KA's specs for the Koncept indirectly recommends SDM mast i.e. "Sizes 5.8 up to 9.5 are provided with SDM cambers....." The North RAM is the little brother to the WARP too so no go there either (these sails are the equivalent of the Loft Switchblades being RDM preferable)

What I'm alluding to really is that if given the time and appropriate cams I reckon you could still tune and get pretty decent results out of full on performance race sails similar to the Loft Racing Blades using RDMs

Brian, the 2016 KA Race will rig on RDM and are designed to rig on either like the Lofts. I'm using mine now and it feels perfect I only have a 7.9 Race and have been using my Loft RDM the top cam stays the same for either mast but I changed the 3 others using my Loft Tekcams out of an Loft sail if you want you can get the KA RDM cams they are around $25 each. I have used my new 7.9 twice and it feels perfect if there is a problem I can't feel it while sailing. I have a KA 460 100% carbon mast sitting in the garage I bought this second hand thinking I would need it but I now doubt I will be using it unless Vando kick my ass and says its cause your using the wrong mast. Then he will still kick it anyway.

What's more confusing is according to unifiber severne SDM and RDM masts have different bend curves, how can a sail rig perfectly on masts with different bend curves? Maybe the manufacturer should say something like "although xyz sail can be rigged on SDM and rdm masts for best performance we recommend SDM ". Of course if you are the marketing guy this is the easiest way to loose ur job

I have a 5.6 and 6.2 R5 overdrives and used both RDM's and SDM's on them.

I've used my 5.6 with 4 types of RDM mast Severne (12%), Naish (12%) Gaastra (9%) and ezzy (flex top). I've done my PB with the severne mast at 41.73knts. The Gaastra also felt and rigged ok, however the Ezzy was just not suited and felt horrible. You have to play around with the cam spacers however the rotation works fine and is the best small cam sail ive owned (had Naish. mauisails)

The 6.2 is slightly different. I rigged it on a naish 430RDM (12%) and it worked fine in terms of feel and cam rotation. There 's a slight lack of tension around the luff sleave on cam number 2 (just above the boom) which you just quite can't get rid of no matter how much you play with the cam spacers. I purchased a severne blue line 430SDM and the 6.2 does look a lot better when rigged on this, however the performance difference was really had to gauge.

I don't have a 7.0OD yet, however for other 7.0 cammed sails sail ive owned, the 430RDM starts to struggle at the 7.0m mark due to a 7.0 have about 32cm of extension and a 6.2 about 2cm i.e it at the limit of its capacity hence tends to be less stable in the mid section in the mast and therefore less stable with the sail. The SDM is a lot more stable (do its larger mid section diameter) when at the max of its capacity, as in the case of a 7.0

My summary is that in the smaller sizes 5.1,5.6,6.2 it doesn't really matter if you go RDM or SDM, so long as you get the right bend curve mast for the sail. In saying that it's surprising how tolerant the sails are to different curves - to a point. I had no problem with the gaastra masts yet the ezzy was too far.
