Anyone tried the new Motos?
I'm wondering how they compare to the Turbos and OD's?

I chatted to one of the testers and he said they were fantastic, better than the ODs.

Better then the OD's at what?
Better at being lighter and softer, or better in fully lit conditions?

I couldn't afford to buy one new, not to mention a series of 3 sails, seems the prices are getting really high on anything surf related these days. :(

I am one of the guys that ride Overdrives for 10 years and i am truly mad that they end the Overdrives.
I don't see a 2 CAM sail having the same power, acceleration, stability and speed than a 3 CAM sail
I would like to see a real full on water compare between the Moto and Overdrive and see what are the real comments of the testers.
I am a weekend warrior thats like to go on slalom gear but doesn't want a full on race sail, so a 3 cam sail is perfect for me.
Having full severne gear, Sails, masts, booms and extensions it will be a pitty that i will have to sell everything and go on to another brand that still has 3 Cam sails

I'm a big fan of the overdrives too, but the Mach sail are also really lightweight and easy to tune, for a full on race sail.
So second-hand OD and Mach sails will keep me going for a long time, before I'll need to look for any other brand. ;)

I don't like to buy second hand race or freerace sails because they usually have a short life span from the fragile mono film
I usually buy every 3 years new sails and masts

Performance of the Turbo with the price of the Overdrive I'm guessing. Business decision..

That sounds a bit excessive, I have been getting about ten years out of the severne sails and masts that I bought new. How is the monofilm too fragile?

On the Code red sails the very front of the sails (inside the wide luff) would give up with time, and possibly a little too much downhaul. I have a few Reflex sails though that I have really used a lot, and the only issue is that I have been wearing the monofilm really thin against the boom, but that is easily fixed by some mylar film in that area.

Had a sailing session two weeks ago with someone who has had overdrives or years, and was testing a 7.1 Moto for the first time. They werent really raving about with it but didnt really have it out in the ideal wind so probably still need more time to make up their mind.
On the other side of things, ive been out a few times with someone who has been using the Motos for months and he thinks theyre fantastic. Hes also very quick on them too.

As far as im concerned, i only just swapped over to OD's from another brand because they are less back hand heavy, so im pissed theyve now decided to discontinue them. Ive got a brand new set sitting at home waiting til the current ones im on wear out.

The only thing you would need to change would be the extension if you swapped to another brand, most brands use constant curve masts with the exception like Pryde

When i buy a sail i buy the mast at the same time. And when i sell it i sell only the sail + mast combo.
I believe 100% that to get the most of a sail in terms of performance, ease of rigging and smooth camber rotation you have to but the sail and mast from the same year.
As i have tested and tried the SDM masts from Severne from year to year are getting smaller in diameter.
I have tried a new severne sail on a old (2 to 3 years) severne mast and the rotation of the cambers was not good at all. I bought the new mas from the same year of the sail and it was perfect.

I sail only on the sea, and it is very salty, sandy and sunny place, so the sails damage quickly.
I also sail around 100 days a year, so for example, my most used sails, 6.2 and 7.0 after 3 years have around 80 to 100 sessions each with a lot of kms on them.
Try that and see how good are they after 3 years.
When a buy a sail i buy the mast also

The OD are the best 3 Cams sails on the market, and i have tried a lot of them

Now i am looking around for OD to stock up for some years but it is very hard to find them, most stores are out of stock or want a fortune for them.

I tried the 6.4 Moto briefly end of last summer here in Perth when Ben was finalising them. I've had Mach 3, 4 and now Mach 5 and have had older OD's.

I don't think you'll be disappointed in them. Yes the OD's are great sails, especially the later versions, but I think you'll find the gap between Turbo and OD reduced with the Moto. In fact, when I get sick of paying big $'s for Machs and can't be bothered smashing a slalom board at 35 knots, I'll probably move down to the Moto's for a more hassle free experience.

Yes, this is very true for Severne, I have a few generations of sail and mast and play around with which mast I use in which sail.
The older masts (Redline) were "hard top" and they flex more around the boom height compared to the later ones (Enigma), even before they started playing around with the diameter as well (Apex Pro).

That might be part of the difference then. I am now mostly sailing in sweet water, but have a similar amount of yearly sailing hours. The damages I have seen in the Code Red sails has been the little plastic front for the battens, they break in winter time here, but can quite easily be replaced. The other main wear I have seen is the sail rubbing against the boom, I use very little outhaul on my large sails, this makes the monofilm really thin with time and one has to protect it before it is worn straight through. With the Reflex sails the batten tips are easily broken during rigging and derigging, but that too is an easy fix if spotted in time.

I am a big fan of the tapered mast sleeve which makes waterstarting substantially easier. The sails feel quite light the during the gybes and in terms of speed, I am inclined to say they absolutely match the Overdrives. Rigging is very straightforward with the matching RDM (Blue) mast and applying the prescribed settings.

As you can read, I am an absolute fan of the Motos. As far as I am concerned, Severne delivers what they have written about the Motos.

Never tried the Turbos. But more waterstart friendly than the OD's and the V8's

Have you tried them fully overpowered?
My concern in not the low end but the high end range.
With the OD i can rig a 7.0 with 20knots and still hold on with 30knots without having to rig another sail

Never tried the Turbos. But more waterstart friendly than the OD's and the V8's

Thanks. I wouldn't sail the ODs in choppy deep water.Im too old to struggle with a full lufftube when I waterstart.

The ODs have drainage holes at each of the battens, so they are a lot easier to drain compared to the race sails.

I have the Moto 6.4 and 7.8 and Turbo 5.5 and 7.0. I find the Moto as easy to handle and water start as the Turbo and used the 7.8 at Cervantes for both the GPS and slalom with winds between 20 to 25 knots and found it handled this range well, coping with being overpowered well. While I'm not the ultimate racer, I found it easy to jump from the Turbo to the Moto. Can't comment on how the jump from an OD to a Moto would go.

My 460 rdm mast is a few years old but works perfectly with the new Moto. Amazing rotation.. ( and I'm fussy ).

My concern in not the low end but the high end range.
With the OD i can rig a 7.0 with 20knots and still hold on with 30knots without having to rig another sail

as we know top speeds are all about the right day and the right gust, but for Moto reference check out the GPS speed challenge for a WA local sailor Tim, that hit a 40knot peak on a 5.8 Moto first day out of the bag. Not using the brand mast, non sponsored rider, no pre-tuning. So is the sail capable - yes it seems so.

The Overdrive was dropped from the line up for one reason only - lack of sales worldwide. So its sad for the handful of sailors that like and bought them, but reality is reality in this day and age.
Everyone should have a go at the Moto before they right them off, as they might be surprised. If you have tried a Turbo GT, the Moto is a completely different sail. If you tried the Turbo M4 the Moto is a step up from that sail. They feel much more like OverDrives.

What Revo said.... I tried the 7.8 the other day in gusty 15-18 knots on the Swan. Wanted to compare them to my usual M5 7.8.

First impressions, light with the rdm mast. Rotation - amazing and solid. How different to my M5's ? Not much ! But a much more user friendly package. Very stable, very race like without the weight and back hand pressure. Maybe not quite as much bottom end grunt but that's to be expected with a higher cut foot and 2 less cams.

Others here seem very pleased with them.

Could easily sail it all day and it's a consideration if I step down from my race sails.
