Hello all,
Thinking of replacing my Tabou Rocket Wide 120/77 with a Severne Fox 120. Reviews have the board really shining when lit in chop
yet it is slow to plane. Has that been your experience ? If so, did moving up a fin size or type help ? Mast for placement ? I would be using it a 7.5 and a 6.5 Gator. 90 kg Intermediate Flat water to medium chop usage. Any shared info and or experience is appreciated !
Thanks !
I (81kg) never tried the Fox 120, but use a Fox 105 for slalom-style ocean blasting. I use it mostly with 6.2/7.0 Overdrive sails. I also have Gator 5.5/6.5. While the 6.5 Gator works perfectly with the Fox105, the Gator 5.5 is too small. It doesn't create enough downforce to really keep the board down in high winds/high chop.
Based on that experience, I would think that the 6.5 is at the very lower end of what works for the 120L Fox. Even given your 90kg, I'd go for a 105L Fox when the wind is good for a 6.5. The sweet spot for a Fox 120 is definitely a 7 - 8m sail. So depending on your prevailing winds, give a second thought to the board size. Or in other words, keep your Tabou Rocket 120 as your medium wind board and your 7.5 sail, and buy a Fox 105 to have fun with the 6.5 when wind picks up and chop gets higher :-).
My first impression when buying the Fox105 3 years ago was that it is not good at early planing, but after getting used to the board, I'd say it is just plain average in terms of early planing. Where it excels is in medium to high chop which for me would be 60-100cm chop. If your water is rather flat, the Fox might not be the ideal board for you.
Regarding fin, I replaced the original 36cm G10 fin of my Fox105 with a 35cm carbon slalom fin and am very happy with it. Tried a 33cm slalom fin once, but was not happy with the lift. So I'd guess that the 40cm fin for the Fox120 is rather on the large end, and I would not buy a bigger fin at all.
Just as a comparison, I have an iSonic 72cm/123L which is 2cm wider and has 3L more volume than the Fox120 and use a 37 or 39cm carbon fin for it.
best
