Hi everyone,

Currently using a Severne Metal wave 150-200, and now looking to upgrade to the enigma boom. Bit unsure if I should choose the 140-190 or 150-200 version. I mostly use the S-1 sail range on a 400 mast, and don't currently have any sails that would require / best-fit the extreme end of either boom.

Suggestions and comments on benefits / constructions differences / strength differences etc. most welcome

Logic dictates that assuming similar construction, 150-200 would be slightly stronger, and slightly heavier. I prefer stronger vs 100g (just a guess) weight saving. So I got the 150 :). Your mileage may vary.

In regards to the question, assuming it was serious, I have the 140-190 Enigma boom and used it with sails from both Neil Pryde and Severne in the sizes 4.2 up to 5.8. I think the 5.8 uses 183cm boom length. I'm over 100kg and had the boom for 2 years now. It's still as solid as the day I first bought it.

On a different note, what's with all these accounts that suddenly appear on Seabreeze? Account opened July 2014 and exactly one post asking an obscure question relating to Severne gear only to be answered a couple of minutes later. I hope this isn't just a poor attempt by someone trying to do social media marketing. Because it's pretty clumsy. I am sure I get red thumbed for this but it had to be said.

I think the carbon boom topic has been covered fairly well on SB. And a simple search would answer most questions. Only other scenario I can think of is that there's crew coming out of the woodwork with interest in the booms, who are not that internet savvy.

Probably a good tip for anyone about to ask a question like this, is to take some time to contribute to some other topics beforehand.

That's quite a welcome Accounts are usually created right before they are first used... and the question is absolutely genuine. I did search the forum - in fact the reason i posted here, and I suspect the reason you might get a lot of "quick Severne questions" here, is exactly because it is where you end when you go looking on the internet for people reporting on their experience with severne gear. (I'm from Denmark, not a very widely used brand here so not a lot of input to find locally).

I don't see that the difference between 140-190 and 150-200 has been covered previously. Closest is that one poster reported issues with using the wave boom for freeride sails (slim profile) - which means the 150 version does not really score on a 'can rig up with a larger sail on a calm day' argument.

Question is being posted now because I'm in the process of placing an order with the only severne dealership in DK, which happens to be placed in the other end of the country (going there for hands-on would cost me at least half the price of the boom). They offered a good price on including an enigma in the deal, but they only have the 150 in stock right now, and their response to my questions felt biased by this. Still a pricey bit of equipment, and since I assumed there most be some sort of point in both versions being produced, I thought it a good idea to seek some input to the decision.

If you have a 150-200 Metal now and it is good in terms of extension sizes and there is only one shop, and they only have one size, and that is the same as you have at present (which is a good size) and they are doing a good deal on that one - then it is probably going to be OK to get that size. I would suggest the risk is small.

The less extension on any boom the stiffer it will be, but a carbon 140-190 at 190 extension will be lighter and stiffer than a 150-200 aluminium at 190 extension. So if they only had a 140-190 and that fitted your sails then there is probably little risk in that either.

Got a 140 - 190 enigma carbon - use 4.2 to 6.2 blade -had for 18 months - big sails can get a bit clunky when bagged out at full extn and there's a lot of flexing going on when overpowered - if I had my time again I would prob go the 150 as I never need a 140 boom length and it would be better to have less extn on the 6.2 - prob slightly heavier tho - they are a very nice boom

Thanks for the answers. I'm happy with taking the strength/flex - weight trade-off, so went ahead and placed the order. With a bit of luck it will get here just in time for a week of surfing on the danish west coast - will be sure to post an 'upgraders experience report' afterwards.

Most 3.7s won't rig on a 150 minimum so if you have a 3.7 get the 140-190 otherwise you will need 2 booms.

You've obviously placed your order already but I'd like to confirm your choice. I sometimes work for a Severne dealer and this is my advice - Unless you are using small sails that need the 140 size boom you are better off getting the larger one, as for any size sail you will be using less extension with the 150 than with the 140 boom, and will have a stiffer boom and a more stable sail. In theory - on the shop floor they are both so stiff you can't tell the difference.
If you are not using sails that need the extremes of either boom (and it is best not to use maximum extension) then either one will do very nicely.

I couldn't find much on the severne carbon wave boom either. But I bought one anyway based on how greate the sails are. I've had it a year now. It's just amazing!! You will not be disappointed.

What is thewater temperature up there? Bloody cold I imagine.

Not that cold atm actually, water is about 22C.

I've been really happy with the boom so far. The reduced weight is obviously nice, but the big surprise has been the much more "direct" feel when controlling the rig. I'm not exactly an expert level windsurfer :) so was not sure if the difference in stiffness would be noticeable to me.
