OK I have used all sorts of contact glues and self adhesive pads over the years, those that have pressure sensitive 3M sticky back stuff seem to go well and of course that's easier than contact glues.

But I want to make my own thicker dual density pads, and have seen Clark Rubber have a self adhesive EVA a bit softer than what we use, and its not really expensive. So was going to use "normal" deck pads over the top of that softer one from Clark Rubber.

Has anyone tried that? I am worried that self adhesive pad on top of EVA sheet may not stick as well as it does to a flat shiny board surface. The pad to board will be fine, but I wonder about the EVA to EVA bond...

Indeed, it seems many dual density pads separate on production boards. But geez they do feel nice .....

Not a problem if it does not work, as I have plenty of material to make new ones, but - thoughts anyone?

For foam to foam bond the contact glue is much better. You might consider the products like SeaDek that are taking the marine industry by storm. Don,t know how teak look planking would be on a slalom board though.

It wont stick properly . It will peel. Contact is the only way. Sadly nowadays i cant find any grooved eva without sticky back. Its nice to have a hard grooved top with a soft underpad. What i did was to grind with a flapper wheel the sticky off the grip material . Do not do this , danger at many levels and three disks later. Now i cut grooves myself ( very time-consuming ).
If anyone knows where to buy gripped eva sheet without sticky please let me know. The lightly imprinted diamond or dogbone stuff is not grippy enough.

Damn was hoping somebody would say self adhesive pad onto EVA works fine.

Imax, there is plenty avail with no self sticky, hydroturf being a good example

I wonder if I put contact glue on the self adhesive backing and on the EVA then bung it together....

I don't think you would have any trouble using the self adhesive deckpad on foam.
Don't ask around but give it a go:
Make a prototype and torture it: put it out in the sun, spray it with ice-spray, put it in the washing machine etc. and you'll see how well it works. I did the same with self-adhesive van insulation (armaflex) and was amazed to see good results when applying more than one layer. Degreasing is key for a solid connection, of course.
If it doesn't seem to bond well, there's no problem adding contact glue to the self-adhesive side of the foam. From my own limited experience and from manufacturer's advice on above-mentioned material (admittedly not EVA) they would not counteract each other.

I found contact cement to work more reliably than self-adhesive pads, even for single density EVA. It's a bit of a hit-or-miss with the self adhesive pads - some are fine for years, others start to come off after a few weeks or months. But with good contact cement, pads just stays on.

That hydroturf stuff is awesome . Some med density eva underneath.

^+1 Hydroturf is the gun. Have used various patterned eva so called 'deckgrips'. Most are ok to stand on. But turn to 'deck slip' when used in a windsurf scenario.

Logically the 3M adhesive will stick fine to EVA....its a double side adhesive and what is the other side already stuck to...EVA. The only question would be how well it sticks to a lower density EVA which may a have a more 'granular" surface. I have found with the 3M adhesive that it sticks way better if you get it pretty hot with a heat gun first.
Easy answer is try it.

Too easy and i can use non peeling contact adhesive.

The stuff I bought has arrived, and it is crap. Moulded top, not cut, like somebody else mentioned in another thread. Its probably too slippery so I will have a sook to the dodgy asian seller - and go back to hydroturf again

When I cut my own pads they were still a little slippery so I lightly sanded over the top with 40 grit and it made a huge difference to the grip when wet . Mabee u can salvage your dodgy Asian sheet

If anyone has leftover hydroturf in a diamond pattern I'd be keen to buy up to half a sheet.....
