Under closer inspection , ( bigger computer screen ) , it may not be so bad.
It looks like somebody re gripped that whole dodgy area or covered it with something. The neatness of the front curve suggests its maybee glue remnants or something like that.
We need to establish the soft damaged area.
Leave the board on the ground and take off your shoes.
Stand on top of the board and walk over the whole area , ( and more ) , pushing down on your heel with all your weight. You will feel where its soft . I would think , ( hope ) , its only around the hole . Check extra carefully around the mast slot.
If its solid , ( apart from around the hole ) , the board is solid and its an easy fix
One more thing , directly opposite the hole there is a little brown fleck is that solid ?

More sandpaper and less scraping is my suggestion. It doesn't look too bad really. It could come up quite well.

It is just a big ugly area. Forget that.

Lets be practical- its a cheap board for a a beginner.

He says it is not soft really, he's a beginner and just wants to use it. Lucky it is solid so now it just needs to be watertight and not slippery...... Its already ugly - so before everyone posts the boardlady link and he thinks he needs divinycell, a vacuum pump and $200 of supplies I suggest the 'dodgy but it works' method:

Get some cheap epoxy resin, 200ml would do it. NOT a fast hardener. Just normal or slow.

Mix up about 100ml with lots of filler - q-cell, or if you are poor then talcum powder, fine sawdust, etc...to about like peanut butter consistency. Then fill that hole on a cold night and stick a bag of frozen peas on it - now it won't get too hot when it sets.

Next day, mix up about 50ml resin and use a foam roller to paint it on realllly realllly thin over the big yukky area, sprinkle on caster sugar very very sparingly ..... like VERY sparingly.

Done. Go sail it.

I tried Imax1 advice and I walked on the board pushing down on my heel with all my weight. Here is my recording to understand how soft it is. At the end maybe it is softer than I was thinking :p


I agree with what Mark_australia said. I feel perfectly fine with the beauty of the board as it is and as a beginner I want the best value for money solution to have fun before the board breaks.

So, I am thinking to follow the Mark_australia's advice. In addition to this, now that you know how soft is the deck, is it a good idea to make holes and inject foam or to use Fiberglass to make the deck harder?

Mark's advice is good. Don't use polyester resin at all. If you are worried about voids under the skin, then you can tap the areas using a coin on its side. Any dull sounding areas indicate delamination between the surface and foam. Small areas can be drilled and filled with epoxy resin from a 5ml syringe. Bigger areas need more serious attention. The goal should be to get on the water as soon as possible, without any leakage.

Hmmm, squirms like a waterbed.....Big repair or big swim. Take your pick.

Under closer inspection of that video ( bigger computer screen ) , the board is really stuffed. By the softness all over and on the rails it has major strength issues. Looks like the rot goes further under the foot straps. If this board got to the planing stage , one of three things WILL happen , 1 , the mast track will rip out = swim and 2 , the board could snap in half = swim or at least the foot plug will rip out = crash . It would be a shame to have to ditch the nice sail in order to swim better.
Because its so stuffed its only use would be for light wind floating around , mabee to check if u can up-haul with this volume board. Only use it in light onshore winds is my suggestion .
The short easy dodgy fix : Get a silicone gun and stuff the hole full and just ride the thing untill u cant no more , remember smile for the photos your going to send us.

Decrepit fixes this kind of damage , he could reconstruct an entire board around a foot strap plug !

Looks pretty soft but then again I don't think you were planning on cracking some high jumps with it so I say Waterproof it and go and have fun !!

I will do what Imax1 said and I will put silicone at the hole to use it if possible. So, if it breaks, I have no problem to upload some cross sectional photos :)
