A tip for sanding that I use is I rub over everything with a pencil & when the pencil marks come out its time for the next grit repeat until you have got to the required grit you desire. This saves much unnecessary sanding & ensures you have got all the scratches from the coarser grit out.
I read this in a book on finishing timber but have found it so effective that I use it now on everything I'm sanding
