We've just bought a Severne Turbo (twin Cam) 8.6 and took it for its first run yesterday. After rigging it to spec we found that the lower cam would regularly pop off the mast during gybes. We tried putting more out-haul on as the sail appeared to have A LOT of camber, however this had little effect on the cam popping issue.Anyone got any ideas?

Yep more down haul ..had a 7.0 2 cam with the same problem ..so it was used with max down haul all the time ..I would say you have the correct mast that also could be a issue .?

^+3 more downhaul needed to create more flex in order to reduce inward mast pressure on cam.

The simple solution is to add a spacer behind the cam to take up more pressure on the mast. There should be some provided in the sail bag.
Pull the cam off when the sail is unrigged, place one spacer at a time and re rig to check. This will push the cam onto the mast firmer reducing any tendency to pop off the mast.

Agree with the spacer idea if the luff sleeve is loose. When sail is rigged, try pinching the front of the luff sleeve at the problem camber. IF you can grab, spare material between your fingers, add spacers until you can't. It shouldn't be tight, (that will make it harder to rotate) but it also shouldn't have any loose material.

On top of all the ideas above, for a really problem cam that is rolling off the mast, you can ad a tube to the inside of the cam (it will need to fit over the batten stem) and that'll restrict the maximum angle the cam will rest at.

Severne donut (aka Severne turbo when you read it backwards, the way it's written on the sail)

So what do I win? A t shirt? Or maybe some board shorts? Where do I collect?

Were you using the recommended mast?

Have exact same sail - 2 years old though. Downhaul is the solution, forget the settings on the sail and keep down hauling until the luff looks flatter and about right. I have a Severne mast in the sail, so that is correct. My understanding is that the spacers will help take out any bagginess from the luff tube but not effect the cam on the mast or rotation (could be wrong).

Thanks all. The recommended mast is a 490 but we're using a severne 460, may affect shape a little but not enough to encourage cams to got awol I wouldn't have thought...I'm off to do some downhauling and mast sleeve pinching, see how things go

Mast-taper *could* be a problem with 460 vs 490 - in which case spacers are the go.
