I have a Severne Overdrive M1 8.6 which I can use comfortably up to 16knots and hang on to for a bit more. Thinking what to get to change down to, choices are Severne M1, NCX or Turbo GT and I'm thinking a 7.0.
Its on a Fox 140 for now but a smaller fox may be on the cards. Water round here is very choppy and the wind tends to be gusty. Love the M1 but thinking something easier to use on the rougher days might be nice

I have a 7.5 KA Koncept below a 8.7 KA Race. The gap works very well and I can use the 7.5 on the big board (130 liter freerace) and on the smaller 115 liter freeride. Cams are nice in gusty conditions so I would go for a 7.5 Turbo (and a 6.x Turbo or NCX below that). If you're not a one brand kind of guy: go for a Ka Koncept in this size. Very nice sail. Way better than I expected. Feels very refined.

if you can use your 8,6 in 16 knot s which is quite normal for todays sails ..a 7,0 would be good .for the 17-19 knot days .

Yes but I'm trying to get away with just 2 sails and one board.
i used to have a shed full of kit, 4 boards and more sails, mast, booms etc than most shops. This resulted in me spending a lot of time on the beach procrastinating about what to take out then wondering if I had made the right choice etc. Also 90% of the time I would use the same 2 sails and board and the rest wold maybe come out once a year.
So now boards and sails have a greater range and living where most days the wind is some where between 10 and 20knots, I'm thinking this should be do-able. I can get going with the 8.6 in 10knots, I can hang on till 18knots then I should be able to jump down to something a fair bit smaller and that should take me up to conditions where the board size is going to me of an issue than sail size thinking 25knots.

At at the moment I'm really liking the one board/sail thing, so far since march ive got out 3-4times a week, only been over powered to the point of giving up a few times.

7,0 sounds perfect then

+1 Severne NCX 7.0. My favourite sail, really forgiving in the choppy, gusty stuff. 16-22 knots on a JP magic ride 111, but Im only 70kgs. If you are a bit more beefy you could possibly hold it somewhat comfortably up to 25knots. I'm on a 4.7 blade and a little board by then though.

Why are you not going straight to a 7.0M1? if you are happy with the other sail seem obvious to stay with that sail. They have huge range more than twin or no cams (someone correct this if required) and you know its big bro well enough.

I'm happy to read this. I'm coming off a low technology 1980s base when I had a 4.7 and 5.2 wave sails plus a 7.0 bag that was horrific but useful for downwind racing. I got back into sailing at 58 a couple of seasons ago and used whatever mix-and-match secondhand gear I could find cheap. I decided, after much agonising, to upgrade to 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0 NCX. The very experienced salesman talked me out of getting the 5.0 until I had tried the 6.0 because it had a huge range and will just twist off when overpowered. I'm finding it hard to imagine having a 6.0 as my smallest sail but look forward to trying.

Ive been blown off the water by a 65kg "Old Crusty" on a NCX7.0. Im 85kg and couldn't hold my 7.5, I'm also strong & capable. NCX are great sails and they have AWESOME wind range.
If I was buying now they would be at the top of the list.

The Old Crusty now has an 8.0 which i have to now contend with on the light days, oh bugger i should have got a foil!

I'm not the bets here to give advice I'm relatively new in Slalom, but it seems sails in slalom are shape differently with size. I have a 7.8 NP slalom sail and a Mach1 7.0 and they do not overlap too much, it's not as important as on a wave sail. For example (5.3, 5.0, 4.7, 4.4, 4.1 from a same brand) Passing from a 5.3 to a 4.7 is normal. 5.3 to 4.4 is doable but not the best. I think this is what you are trying to do, passing from a 5.3 to a 4.4. it's doable but you will be in between sails. Make sure your home spot is not often 15-18 kts. ;=)
