Hi guys,
i need some advice for my new windsurf gear. I started wingfoiling last year and therefore wanted to reduce my number of windsurfing boards. Now i have bought a new jp magic ride 109lt as windsurfboard for me and my wife (58 and 76kg).
it is a compromise as we both are sailing mostly in flat water conditions in 3-6bft.
Currently i am using the following sails:
JP Firefly 5,7 (freestyle), 5,0 combat for me
and 4,5 Zone (wave) for my wife (she is an intermediate surfer and really can't handle bigger sails)
One smaller fin for the smaller sails and a bigger fin for the bigger sails.
Does this make any sense to use these sails with this freeride board or would you advise to change the sail types?
5,7 free ride sail?
Thanks
Juergen
Hi, your sails seem rather small for this board. While I (80 kg) have never sailed on the MR 109, I do have a 105L freeride/freerace board (Severne Fox 105) and find that the board is very difficult to control with a 5.5 or 5.0 sail when blasting over the chop.
When paired with a 7.0 or 6.2 slalom sail or a 6.5 freeride sail, the board is rock stable due to the high pressure on the mastfoot generated by the larger sails. I tried the 5.5 today at around 18-22kn in choppy conditions, and the board started to lift too much.
So overall, your sails seem very small for that board. If you really go fast in high wind, expect some control issues.
I'd recommend to get some bigger sails. In the NP range, maybe a speedster 5.7 and 6.7. These should be ok between 4 to lower 6 bft.
And get a smaller fin for your wife for her 4.5 sail.
