I have a secondhand ncx in good nick.Rigging it to specs I end up with the battens in front of the mast and a vertical crease in the luff tube in front of the boom area..? Will more downhaul fix this? Id it normal?
It's a 7m rigged on a 460 severne SDM mast ( as they say)

How does the leech look at that setting?

I'll have to have a look next time I rig it and maybe take a photo.
Sorry I remember thinking as I was sailing that it looked like it needed more..Not much scallop...I'm used to the overdrives..

I'm not familiar with the NCX but have Gators and Blades and it's normal to have some batten alongside the mast at idle when rigged for light wind, same as with pretty much any cam-less sail. At standard downhaul and outhaul setting I'd say there shouldn't be too much (ideal would be the end of the first batten above the boom is touching the mast or half-way across the mast diameter at most), but standard settings are only a guide (albeit in my experience with Severne sails, a very good guide). Downhaul would be first culprit but if your leech is already floppy enough then outhaul, but I think if you are resorting to outhaul to pull the battens past the mast then something's not quite right.

So if the battens overlap to in front of the mast it sounds like more downhaul? It is secondhand so maybe stretched?

Sorry no info on overdrive but rigs simular on my turbo 8.1 too.

How does the Turbo go vs NCX? or why did you go tubo when NCX comes in larger size or visa versa if the turbo was first.

Tight leach ?
Im a fat bastard and that would be my survival mode downhaul mode.
This is a play sail , not a three sizes to big race sail ( don't know how they do it )
Or I could be drunk again

Even though I may be drunk , looking at the crease above the batten above the boom , I think I can see a crease almost half way across.
Unless your 55 kg , I would think it's better to go down a size and rig it like u stole it.

More downhaul will draw the battens away from the mast, yes. If you've already got enough downhaul (based on leech) then resort to more outhaul. The leech should be be loose between top two battens, a bit loose between next two battens down, and tight or nearly tight between next two battens down. Thats a rough guide and maybe the NCX should be looser.

Just noted the NCX has 7 battens. So there should be some looseness in leech between 3rd and 4th battens down from head. Tight below that.

I think its ok if the lower battens overlap, it is the 2nd or 3rd from the top that has to point straight at the center of the mast. Once you achieve that the looseness in the leach should be appropriate, if not it means that something is wrong.

Thanks..Dur I knew I'd seen a general rigging guide somewhere..I have one of those from Guy Crib.
Thanks everyone I'll set it up as you say.

One other issue. I assume they usually use rdms? I find it a pain to get the boom on .The luff at the cutout is so tight I can't fit things through easily ( thread the clamp line or get it around the 'tongue 'clamp.
I've resorted to putting it on with half downhaul and turning the rig over so I can find the loop and have room to hook it over.
Any suggestions?
I'm used to cam sails with the big luff tube.

Sue, for NCX I suggest Severne Mast, rig to spec and with old sails (maybe stretched if used previously on wrong mast) a bit more outhaul. Sail it a few times like that and see how it goes!

It's a 2015 in pretty good nick. I've sailed it a few times and seems pretty good in constant winds but in gusty conditions less stable than the overdrive. I'm not sure how it should feel though as I'm used to cammed sails.
It was mainly seeing the batten 1-2cms in front of the mast that didn't seem right to me..I'll try more downhaul next time and see if that fixes it.
It seems to have more low down grunt than the OD to me and is lovely and light on the 100% mast..

You could also follow the official Severne rigging guide for cam-less sails...

I looked that up but it didn't show the position of the battens / mast which is why I posted here. I tried to look up rigging videos but the ones I found didn't go into detail on what I was after.

Fair enough - I thought as much. I was just pointing out the difference between the Guy Cribb drawing and the Severne drawing wrt how loose the leech is. The leech on the Guy Cribb drawing (left hand side, with the tick) is too loose for my liking. Hey but opinions are like #rseholes - everyone has one (especially on the web)!

Looking at the severne pic I'd say it definitely needs more downhaul so I'll see if that fixes the batten issue. More downhaul brings the battens further back onto/ behind the mast..?

I have always gone by the guide that the batten above the boom should be touching the mast / at most the end should sticking half way across the mast, and you should be able to push the end of the batten to the other side of the mast with your hand without too much effort. I think that is the generally accepted default setting. For light wind you may have more batten sticking across the mast, which will lead to a fuller shape when it's powered-up. But at some point it will not rotate easily.

Thanks. I'm keen to try out the sail again with all this advice but I'll be speedsailing next session so it will have to wait till next week!

This is another photo of my ncx 7mtr on 460 mast and have turned for higher wind blasting as you can see batons only just touching mast below boom. But this is totally detuned.
