I guess reading about windsurfing might not be the best way to gain skills/ideas, but I read a fair bit of technical stuff in my free time due to my work and wouldn't mind using that time to read up on windsurfing technique. Are there any classic/recommended books I might want to buy? Perhaps video is a better medium for something so physical, but not as convenient to carry around.

I suppose since I've mentioned it, what videos are worth buying? I've seen Guy Cribb's INtuition Core Skils DVD. Anything else? A lot of them look like they were filmed in the 80's!

The Guy Cribb one is excellent for core skill and cracking the carve gybe, Other ones you might want to track down are "beginner to winner" and "winner to wave sailor". There's also heaps of stuff on the net, Just google and you shall find.

....Also pop onto the Guy Cribb web site, He has heaps of downloadable pdf's you can download and read. They cover just about everything.

Thanks guys! I knew about the Guy Cribb PDFs. Definitely need to get a copy of his DVD, even if it does cost a small fortune.

It's a good read. I've slowly been visiting some of the locations in it.

Youtube is great for learning things like gybes.

I think I downloaded every clip on water starting trying to understand ;-).
I used media burner and itube apps to download copies onto iPhone - beats reading women's magazines when in waiting rooms or the loo :-)

Look for a series that includes peter hart giving tutorials Just search peter hart windsurf


He has an understandable seminar on planing from the same user

The DVD beginner to winner is indispensable for a beginner like me - I watch it all the time

I would get beginner to winner first - the Alan caldiz videos are also useful and affordable online from local shops


Keep blogging as it helps to reflect on your sessions

hi, if you can afford it, go on one of these windsurf clinics - you will learn heaps - Id recommend jem hall, he does one in mauritius in september, the rest are in europe mailny, or with guy cribb, or if maui is easier/closer for you, matt pritchad. If you cant afford it, get together with a mate and do video sessions of each other - seeing what you do is rather than what you think you're doing is the best feedback.

IMO, you have to be intermediate for those things to be worthwhile.

I second "Trictionary II" - very good book.

The Cribb sheets also really really good. I laminated mine and take them to the beach.... leave them under a towel when you are practicing something in particular and refer to it when you need to........

Not so. I have just been on one (Guy Cribb) and I would say there is something for everyone regardless of skill level.
Probably intermediates would get the most out of a clinic, having good background skills but still plenty to learn, but there is always more to learn in windsurfing and clinics are the quickest way to advance.

Yeah, I'd really like to get on an INtuition clinic. Will hold off until I feel like I've got all the basics down. I like the idea of going on one of his overseas clinics in Europe or somewhere else and doing it as part of a longer holiday.
