Can anyone point me to any doco on how to re-grip (sugar coat) a board? Couldn't see an existing posting about this. What type of glue, sugar etc...

I've just used the lightest coating of standard surfboard wax, I'm well happy with it.

i found the wax heats the board up substantially when left sitting in the sun. might cause problems to the board if left hot for too long

mystic make 2 different kits to regrip boards, check out boardcrazy.com, i regrip boards all the time, it's not too hard if your handy with spray paint.. sugar grip don't really work these days on epoxy boards..

Clean up the deck, remove all wax, roughen up surface with sand paper, 40-80 grit, got to do this realy well. tape off non grip sections.
Mix up some polyester resin, and give the board a light coating of resin, work fast.
Now use a sive to spread ordinary house hold sugar on to wet resin, do this till all wet patches disapear
I strongly suggest doing this on a cooler day and try out thes method on something else first , if you have never worked with polyester before.
It can also be done with epoxy resin, but will go yellow after a while,
After a day or two, wash off sugar, and lightly rubb over the new surface whith some 400 wet + dry sand paper, other wise you are going to lose some skin off your feet, if you did a good job.

I have done a few over the years. I use to make boards years ago.

I have re-gripped 15 or so Epoxy type boards.

Masking tape up around the board, where the existing grip deck finishes.

Sand lightly all over with 240 grit sand paper, be careful not to sand off and decals, or pictures.

Mix up some west system epoxy resin, using the FAST hardener. Pour mixed resin into a small empty ice cream container.

Get a small foam type roller. I think they are about 4 inch wide. Put the roller into the ice cream container, and roll onto the board deck. You roll it so it is on the board, as a very very thin layer. Probably use about 50 - 70 mil of resin in the end, but it is still worth while to mix up about 200 ml of resin. Then sprinkle on sugar, using another small container with 30 or so tiny holes drilled into the bottom of it, and once you have a good coating of sugar on the board, blow as much of it off, as possible, using your mouth. You will go very lightheaded a few times. But what you have left is a very grippy deck that wont hardy yellow in the sun (as it is such a thin layer -I have done white deck boards, and it stays pretty much white (non-yellowing))

Leave board about 3 days, then hose it off, and go sailing. You basically add no weight, as the resin layer is so thin, and most of the sugar you put on the deck is blown off, so only the right amount of sugar is left on the board, which is enough to cut up your skin, if you fell on it, without a wetsuit. I did one once and a friend rubbed a little sandpaper over it to take the grippy edge off it, as he found it too grippy, but after a few sails, it seems to loose the coarseness about it, and will last for a good few years of sailing.

I did this with a boat a few years ago, we put the sugar through the mix and then brushed it on. It worked fantastically, only thing was that the boat was like a beacon for bees for a few days, despite washing the deck thoroughly, about 10 hours use and a few capsizes. But after that everything came good.

A few corrections
Use 240 grit wet and dry with soap and water.
Use UV resistant epoxy only need 40mls, a thin layer of epoxy will yellow in WA after 3 years.
Use 1 cup 250ml Caster sugar or salt.
Dont sand after.

Before re gripping get a nail brush and soap lightly scrub your board as may be oil stuff on board,
get a pumice stone rub it on the bottom of your feet and roughen soles of your feet up(worked for me mine were hard and shiney from thongs and walking bare feet) then try board if still slippery re grip as above.

Agree with CASTER sugar and no sanding afterwards.

I've used epoxy and polyester resin, think polyester surfboard grade finishing resin is best, doesn't yellow and is harder.
Last couple of boards I've sprinkled it onto 2 pack urethane spray paint, that also works OK.
I keep adding sugar until it no longer soaks up resin, then brush off the next day and wash.
If it's warm you should have no trouble using it after 24hrs

the proper way to do it guys is 2k clear coat with ground down polyester mixed into it or just sprinkled on top. either way works well, the first requires a old spray gun with a large nossel.. this is how all the manufacturers do it.. the propb is the polyester has to come from hawaii...

Mitre10 have white adhesive stair tape about 80 mm wide. My longboard is tastefully decorated with it for 6 months without any problem. Rub with brick until it no longer draws blood.

Don't bother with Sugar. Go to a mariune supplier and buy a small bucket of Intergrip by International Paints. Sprinkle this over your wet UV epoxy. Works like a dream.

Hmmm...some good suggestions here - I'm in the same boat - board needs to be re-surfaced - although someone suggested I just wear booties. Any comments?

Also I had a look at the Mystic Non-Slip Paint from boardcrazy.com (thanks P.C_Simpson) - anyone had any experience with this?

I have tried numerous times to wear boots and I just find them annoying. Can't get my feet into and out of the straps freely and can't feel the board properly. I will only wear them now if it is really cold.

They do give great grip though and lots of people swear by them (not at them).

We had a old board, extremeily slippery deck and we were going to put surfboard wax on it. In the end i just used booties when ever i used that board. Saves messing around, much easier, and no margin for messing things up.
