Neil pryde X6 boom died today, only 8 months old. Large fracture about 6 inches from one end, unlikely due to a catapult, looks like it's about to snap in two.

Can't think what I've done to damage it...except recently I've been using it on a bigger sail, fully extended. Thought that should be alright though.

Suppose it could be a manufacturing defect, is it wishful thinking that this would be guaranteed by NP?

warranty = 12mths on most windsurfing products

booms should be lasting 18mths + with regular useage, including catapults.

go to the shop and get Neil to give you a new one.

Say what you will about Pryde, they do seem to honour their warranty claims quite well...

(It may be from all the practice they get, but that's another story [}:)])

Thanks i'll do that, worth a shot. On NP web site they say they dont cover masts, but couldn't see a menion of warranty for booms.

Just shows always check your gear, which I didn't today. Only noticed it when packing up although did think something felt a bit odd!

There crooks neil pryde. I have a 09 sail that has million cracks in it..They sure do get to practise there warranty claims..I bet.. your spot on there nebbian

Don't use again in this cond... Get a new back end... If back end breaks, will probably break the front end.

How often have you used it?

Wash it washed in fresh water after each sail? I'm interested to know as I try to wash my gear in fresh water and wonder if its worth the hassle.

I had a boom warranty claim a couple of years ago. Pryde X5 lots of cracking around the head area.

They were pretty good & replaced it. (apparently it was a common fault)

I THINK IT WILL DEPEND ON HOW GOOD YOUR RETAILER IS. IF THEY VALUE THEIR CUSTOMERS.

Do you use it with those holes up or down????
Most booms come with the holes down, the theory being it helps drainage.
BUT!!!!! it's the bottom of the boom that's in tension, when you hang your weight on the harness. That's tring to open the holes up, just like the split in your boom.
If you have the holes up, they're in compression.
If yop were a hole would you rather be torn apart or squashed????
(hint, remember the Romans and their arches)

Used it probably 20-30 times since november. Mostly light wind days

Almost always washed with fresh water, and also dried with a towel afterwards, so it doesnt drip crap over the inside of the car.

Definitely take it back.

My X6 boom was replaced (SHQ Vic) after it snapped near the head...it was about 12months old. I didn't actually want another NP boom as it was the 3rd one that I had broken, but as it was a replacement - I took it. I snapped that one mid-jump a few weeks ago & it was about 3yrs old, so not bad for a big guy?

Take it back to where you got it from.

Neil pryde X6 boom died today,Spent 3 hours swimming back to shore

When my last one broke (on way out to do some jumps) it broke the whole boom arm off. Luckily the front clamp & clew fitting stayed on the other arm, so I simply flipped the rig & sailed it back in...I wouldn't reckon that would be the norm though.

I was going to go out in the ocean, but wasn't sure if it was going to be a bit offshore...westerly, or southwesterly - seabreaze, bom, and reality seem different.

Fortunately just out on narrabeen lake again.

With a 3 hour swim I'd be looking pushing the big red button on my EPIRB

I asked Loft booms whether i should wash them in fresh H20 and they said you didnt have to.
