I'm thinking of upgrading to R8's . I've read that larger sails are better on SDM's and smaller on rdms..I'd prefer rdm's if they work but feedback from users please?
What do the R8's rotate best on?

Thanks. So have you tried the rdm's as well?
I was going to go RDM but if they rotate better on the SDM will aim for those..

Sue ?????? I have a R8 OD 5.7 running it on my SDM and it's perfect rotation is blissful.

Researching rdm v arm and found this.I'm not sure if it relates the same to Severne but reading this as a lighweight I might be best with a dam for the 7.5 but rdm for smaller? Comfier in chop and twist off more with rdm in stronger winds..

Just go the Apex, they are drop shape (reduced diameter midsection), the reduction in diameter makes them really nice to handle, they make reflex rotate really well so imagine OD be better again.

So the rdm equivalent ones don't have that shape ?

Sue if you really want an RDM solution, how about emailing Severne to ask which rdm mast they would recommend for the R8. As others have said already said the R8 rotates best on the new Apex and Arc masts and is what Severne recommend, so I would be going with manufacturer and other sailor recommendation on such a major purchase. Otherwise you'll need to buy rdm cans too.
I think that dialog on Rdms being good for lighter sailors probably relates to other brands, or earlier versions of the overdrives I've had no issues with my r8s on SDMs, I love them. The r8s work fine on the earlier SDM90 masts too (except the 5.7 for some reason), but rotation is best on the apex.
Good luck with your new sails and masts purchase and keep us updated on how you go with them.

I've been talking to Ben at Severne..still a bit confused re RDM or SDM,..I like the idea of RDM but everyone here recommends SDM...
Waiting on a reply email..
Once I buy I won't get them till mid October but the way my shoulder is I won't be sailing till then either..argh!! I am looking forward to new sails as I've never had any new OD's before..
PS- 2ndhand 6m - 7m and 7.8m coming if anyone is interested..plus a 430 blueline mast

if you do go with the RDM mast you will have to change all the cambers in the sail which bumps up the price of the sail.

Why do you prefer RDM over SDM?
Do you have RDM in your current sails?
