Hi,

Currently my stuff is piled up on my dinghy, under the carport, but is exposed to afternoon sun.
I have some space along the fence and could build a storage - and could benefit from other people's ideas and experiences.

Requirements:
Space for 4 boards
6 sails
3 masts
A box with smaller parts (50x80cm?)
width 80cm
length 280-300cm
Needs to be protected from the top, back and sides. Some practical front coverage

Your ideas on the design and materials would be very much appreciated.

Interesting to see someone with the same dilemma as me! I have an awkward property on a very steep slope with limited space. Am currently building a shed out of an old shed elsewhere on the property. New frame is up but it's not quite done yet - still needs to be clad in colourbond. Shed sit off the ground and anchored to hardwood screen posts and off sloping concrete slab. Dimensions are 0.7x2x2.7m so will hold boards, sails etc plus other tools and general things like whipper snippet n stuff
All bolted together with 10mm bolts no welding - have kind of made it up as I go but it looks the goods!

WOW, that is steep

Maybe add some sort of insulation under the roof at least. Tin sheds get very hot... little ones probably more so.

Try a van (?).

A small shed is not bad idea. Maybe there is something readily available - 3m long - 1m deep - then add shelving.
I don't think I'm up to building a shed like Bowsa.

Obelix, a small shed is fine, plenty of 2nd hand jobs about. or just a lean to attached to the fence. To keep it cool as I did with my trailer, I purchased a stack of off cut insulation and liquid nail glued to the inside of the trailer. Works a treat and the interior is relatively cool compared to what it used to be.

There are small "under eaves" sheds like that.
Trouble is as mentioned they get mega hot. I would insulate the shed and put a little roof about a foot higher than the shed so it is in the shade

Hmm now thinking - often the tip has coolroom panels thrown out, could build something with that......

Hey Obelix . Every thought of a trailer ?
It's a potable shed ,you never have to unload your gear again just unhook .
Just wash wet suit and done ..

Trailer would be nice, but in a way, similar to a van.
Such a trailer would be quite expensive to buy/build. then would cost money to maintain, etc.

A S/H shed would be under $300, then wood (or other stuff) for shelving. Hopefully under $500 in total.
And yes, will require insulation.

wood is good.and you can do it yourself.

here the issue is the cold
so, stuff gets stored inside most of the year
however, this means we have temporary covers for snow
NOT sure such a thing is available in your neck of the woods
there are MANY sizes and configurations ...
could always make a homemade version ??

As per the photo, this would probably be blown away across the backyard.
But contributes towards the final design, as I could use canvas as a front cover.

Two pieces of 2 *4 on about a 20deg angle bolted to the fence posts. Put them on the inside as I think the posts were 2.4 apart from memory.

Then drill holes to suit what ever dowel you can find at about 250mm centres, square to the 4*2. This puts the board on an angle to counter a bit of flex in the dowel. I used pine rake handles as a complete rake was considerably cheaper than the same length piece of pine dowel at the time (go figure).
You can get Oak dowel, if you want it a bit stronger.

Some hensilite or tin for a roof on a timber frame, also bolted to the fence with shelf angle brackets with some timber battens and shade cloth hanging off that to keep the sun off the sides. Chuck on some pipe insulation on the dowels if needed.

The struts take most of the load off the fence, so it shouldn't fall over, and is quick to remove if you have to move it.

On eBay there are 2m x 700 wide sheds. I'm thinking of buying two & joining them together to store 3.8m race boards.
Plenty of options especially around the 2.4m length. Search garden sheds.
Coolite foam can be purchased from art stores too.
A "safari" roof on top, like the old Land Rovers, or paint roof white/ silver, add a whirly vent

Only looked at Gumtree so far, and wasn't impressed by the prices.
But a 3mx1.5m on eBay can be purchased for $300 + $100 delivery. Then I need to make shelving. I'll have a better look. Some even provide shelving.




So sheds are an option. Will need to open the front - remove the doors and at least one panel in front - so the boards can be easily extracted.
Also - not sure what's expected to be under the shed - a concrete slab? Or can it be bolted to the paving.

A wooden shed is still bugging me, as it can be created to the dimensions which suit the space.

Could be another 20cm long, and 20cm lower. Then to remove the front completely. An ugly looking thing though.

I have some tin roofing sheet I took down from an old shed. I used some of it to build a section on the end of my carport for storage of boards etc but plenty remaining if you want it. Probably about 28m worth in total so you could use for sides also.

Throw a cover over the dinghy and boards to keep the sun off. Or, build a special rack in the carport for you boards and make a neat cover with well though out tie downs to keep the element and dirt off. Here's mine rack when I kept my stuff in a carport. I eventually threaded a stainless steel cable through all the footstraps and locked it as a deterrent to the casual theif.

Not sure which way I'll do this. Definitely like the Shifu's shelving - and will use it as a sample. Possibly a bit less space between the slots.

I think I understand the options I have - now it needs to satisfy the building approvals commission (my wife) who needs to approve the design.

Not to mention that I'll actually ask her to build it for me

It's home made. These pics will explain the structure. I like to make these free-standing as I often seem to be moving house.

Obelix .these are just 6$ book case shelf stands with a 4" x1 pellet wood ,600 ml piece of pine .beauty of these ,you can put them anywhere ,eg above windows .silicon or glue a piece of carpet on top ....done . I have them everywhere .

No worries ,just ideas for you when you get the shed built ,you can screw a piece of ply to them too for your sails ,that way you have a complete shelf ,rather than just 2 areas holding your sails up .if a small lip is built too you can put extensions and other things on too .
