Is it possible? Of course you can't get the 'fastest' or the best wave board all in one, but is it possible to get a good compromise or is everything just too specific for a role these days?

Last two days I've had bump jump small waves 93 ltr/5.2m and today 100ltr/7m (ideally 6-6.5m would have been better) ocean blast.

The wave board is by far my fav, loves how it turns , punches through white water and jumps, but it's seldom ridden due to lack of reliable strong winds, it really likes 20knts to play nicely.

The 100 ltr is super comfy, reliable and fast, but it's not for jumping or catching a wave.
I would love to have just one board 2-3 sails, can it be done or am i dreaming?
15-25 is the wind range most likely, with big holes in it often!

Interested to know if anyone's living the one board dream!

The easy answer is just sail flatwater and get a flat water board, but I'm not ready to put out to pasture yet!

It sounds like a dream ,unless I can find a 100 litre board that you can use a 8.5 on ,I' m a two board person .
I don't want to miss out on the light wind days ,having the right gear gets you on the water ,

I reckon the closest you will get is a FSW setup as a trailer.
I converted one and it was awesome. Want to do it again.
With trailer setup it is loose.
Remove all the fins and put the big factory FSW fin back in and it is - well, a FSW
Bigger fin and it can be a bit more freeridey.

Convertible is better than a in-betweeny feel.

Yep a large multi finned freestyle wave board would cover a wide wind range, the turns would be just a bit more drawn out as in not such a tight radius.
Quads and twins have such a good wind range when the wind picks up as unlike a single fin you don't have one deep fin with all that leverage trying to flip the board over on those 4.5m windy days.

Your dream just came a reality. Check out the Naish Starship. It comes in 90, 100 and 115L. I have the 115L model and it's by far the best board I ever sailed for your kind of conditions. The board is advertised as a Freeride, freestyle, bump and jump wave board. It's a board that does it all and I can vouch for that. The board handles a huge sail range, has a great shape and is plenty fast. I sail it in 12-30 MPH winds with no bouncing around. I have a 27, 34 and 38cm fins with 5.3, 6.0, and 6.8 sails that let me out in that range of conditions.

Ah Jonesy, this is a path I seem to be heading. Narrowed it down to 2 boards now-from 4. Current boards- 94 Kode / 111 Carve. The Kode works great from 15-25 or so knots, and the Carve is sweet from 14- 20 knots. Over that it's scary.

My though of an ideal one board (at 80 kg and primarily ocean blasting, bit of wave) may well be a 103 Kode. The thruster set-up should add some versatility in the waves too. Sail sized from 5 -7 meters, should work well from 14-25-ish knots I'd say. Keen to try one.

but here's a thought what about a click together plastic board similar to the click together kayaks, different sections for different conditions/volume etc.

All I do is ride in the waves, and I can't imagine showing up w/o one of my 3 boards, high, medium, and low.
Sometimes all 3 of them will get wet on the same day.
Quite often it's much easier to switch out the board, than the sail, when the wind changes.

I think Mark and Rider are on the money with this one. Around 100 l FSW with the ability of a Freeridy fin like a Vector freeride and then a multi fin setup, this should extend the range and control to up to around 30 knt. Do it Jonesy !

As a 1 board solution I've had a 95 Freewave which I used soley as a 1 board for a couple of years in anything from 15 plus flat water to 30 plus bump and jump.
used with a single freewave fin was pretty quick but nothing like a dedicated free ride or slalom board.
Used with small thrusters and a trailer centre is a great combination in bump and jump and waves.
I now have a 99 tri wave and is one of the best boards I've ever had. I normally run a 23 centre and 9.5 thrusters
I've also found that when it's really howling I'll change back to the original fins ( 12s on the sides and 19 in the centre) as this slows things down and makes the board more manageable.
I'm about 87 kilos and only ever had a 4.5,5.3 and a 5.6 but have recently added a couple more sails just to confuse me On the beach
Do yourself a favour and get a multi fin freestyle wave board, you can do so much with them you won't be dissapointed

you are no help lungs,i cut up 2 boards ,a wave and a slalom clipped them together and it didn't work ,next time i am going to tape them one on top of the other and then swap witch is on the bottom depending on conditions

Looking at the 93 to replace both my ageing 2006 JP FSW 86 and 2010 Tabou Rocket 95 with the one board. Not into wave sailing at all, just fast blasting on the ocean or flat water with the occasional bit of bump n jump in rough water. Has Powerbox which suits me as I've got plenty of PB fins.

in order to have only 1 board you will first have to sell all the rest, this has never worked for me as i still have 12 boards at my house,and still looking for a high wind high volume bump and jump board? .

Here is a board I got Peter Ross this year.
An OES Outlaw 105. Built to the requests that you are asking for.
I have used an 8.6 Turbo and reached 25kts in about 13kts of wind. Had one sail in waves well out of my league(3/4 mast high). I did catch one wave and it felt good. Had a few good bump and jump rides 5.3/5.7 days and cracked 30kt the other day with a 5.6 Reflex. Probably at the lower end of the wind scale for that sail on the day.
The day with the 8.6 was an added bonus. We thought 7 -7.5 might have been the max sail size.
Its a nice comfy board to sail in choppy conditions. But I am waiting for a bit more wave action to test it out properly.
It won't be the best board for any one discipline but it ticks a lot of boxes so when I go for a trip I can only take one board and be happy.

Freewave board + foil + 2 waves sails + one freeride rig?

12 boards! No chance we have in/out policy in our house , hopefully I find a sweet trade deal at one of our wonderful local retailers!

The entire idea is to assist with more time on water sailing as close to home as possible not driving to try and find the right conditions if I can help it,
And also to be able to fit SUP/Sail/kite and a tribe of 4kids and their **** in the van!
Thinking cutting gear down also will make me pay more attention to tuning and focussing just on my sailing and skills , bit like when I first started when my one board did everything!!
My kite and SUP are one size fits all needs so I'd like to think I can get my windsurfing to fit the same criteria.
The feedback on the multi fin thing is key I think, 100ltr ish board (I'm 85-90kg range depending on the season!) and tune with fin options.

Foil thing, I'd love to give it a crack, looks awesome, but I think I'm going to spend those really light days, collecting brownie points for windy days, and my 4yr old lil man is showing some interest in SUP/sail (unlike his older sisters!) so those lovely light wind days I should be investing in his skills this summer.

So if anyone wants an awesome wave board and freeride/race board let me know , it could be gear change time!

Fanatic FSW 15-20 litres of float. Sails 4.5 to 7.0 Swapping out Fins as described works.
I've sailed it in 35Kn and a 12Kn sea breeze.
I'm told the FSW Stubby may be even better. Haven't sailed one though.
OES seems to have taken the concept and further refined it.
It took me several boards to find a one board (Almost) solution. I used this board 95% of last season. It wouldn't have made any difference not having my 92L wave board spent most of it's time on the roof of my car.
A very good compromise. Lots of brands do the same thing. Popular choice here where conditions can be less than perfect.

I don't do wave or free ride sailing.

For me the 2016 106 litre Tabou Manta would be my choice.

12-30 knot wind range!

Were I only allowed one sail - my 6.6m Maui TR8 is pretty easy to control in 15-25 knots.

25-30 knots with max downhaul - I'd give it a go.

Oh, so you want definitions, not commonsense? I'm 95 kg, above average. Whippet boy is 72kg, below average. How about 78kg to 90kg? If you are at the extremes, maybe go for a size smaller or larger.

Just adding to the FreeStyle Wave (FSW) solution. Have a 105 litre Fanatic FSW. I'm 75kg.

I use it with a 5.5 and 6.3 Hot Sails SuperFreak, and the standard 29cm fin and a Black Project 36cm FreeRide fin.

So that's one board, one mast, one boom, two sails, two fins.

I'm one of those evil people that use the outboard straps on a FSW board. I don't care. I'm blasting and jumping and gybing so it suits better to have the straps (a little) outboard; it just makes it more comfortable; can drive a little more off the fin.

It's a Bump'n'Jump and blasting board that rides and gybes beautifully. Admittedly it's not particularly good at anything, but not particularly bad at anything either. There's a lovely flat section in the rocker to plane on and if setup correctly (everything in the middle, so easy) the board will actually sit really flat, a bit like a slalom board. On a reach even slalom guys seem to only pull away from me very slowly.

I am considering moving to something edgier both board and sails, more freerace, but I really like the way this board handles the chop of the bay and is so easy to sail.

Nice board 'E/Panda'..rockets optional?! That's one of the models I had in mind, the sail/rig gear reduction is also an added bonus!

Struggling to imagine controlling a 100lts board in those conditions, (maybe only as I never have really given a 100ltr multi fin a go) I wouldn't have taken my FR 100ltr out in it, just too rough waves and windy for it....then as it often does the the storm came..wind started getting sketchy and I was thinking how good would 100ltr be now!! So its good to see and hear some first hand experience at using the bigger board in stronger wind. Constant 25+ is our 'rare' conditions in SE Qld, 15-25 with the occasional squirt +25 is more the norm.

'Peter' yes if i was just sailing river/lake would be dead easy one board, even one sail would cover me 90% of the time locally, i had that same board also, really liked it, was a great flat water blaster and easy to control when it got a bit bumpy...not an ocean going vessel though!

Sounds like the same wind / conditions as down here Jonesy. Rigged a 5 meter on the 94 Kode, was pretty well spot on. Others on 4.5 up to 5.5, boards from 87 to 106 litres. I guess it's skill level and rider weight that dictates final gear choice under those cranking nor-east conditions.

I was looking to slow the Kode down, and replace the 26 cm fin with a 28 cm. This makes me think perhaps all the drag from a quad would make them a much less flighty, more planted board under those conditions- perhaps even at 100 litres...

I spent 3 months travelling around Europe with my old 105ltr Exocet ExoWave and 2 fins (very small, flexy DTL fin a larger onshore fin). It floats me (95kgs), can get planning in about 13/14 knots and I can just about hang on in 30knots (Naxos was this and some). I used it in the med (France, Spain, Greece), on the lakes at Leucate (sure it's slower than a freeride but I was trying some freestyle), in the waves at Guincho and in the UK in Poole Harbour at Sandbanks. Winds ranged from 5 knots (float out) to one day in the UK which would have been 40knots.

So yes, you can get away with one board, but I reckon I'd stick with a single fin and no, it's not as good as having two or three options!

I have 4 boards, and yet, I spend 90% of my sailing time on a single free race board which is my weight + 15 litres.
I think I could settle on a FSW instead of free race in that size.
