Board making brains trust

Back in the day of Dion blanks & polyester board construction, there was a method of applying non skid that involved putting down a light layer of resin then laying some cloth over this. As the resin gel'd, the fibre would be peeled back leaving behind an imprint of the fibre surface creating a really nice finish.

Does anyone recall what type+weight of cloth was used in this process?

I know a guy that used to use tulle and it worked pretty good.

Peel ply

Its the same as satin used for making flash dresses

I've used various things from Spotlight and found that sometimes the threads strip out when removing it, so for a one time thing I think its worth buying peel ply from a composites supplier.

Trick is to wet the surface and the cloth so as to not get voids.

We used to add a layer of 4 oz., saturate, then hard squeegee most of the resin out, leaving behind all the cloth with minimal resin.
Makes a textured deck.

my wind actions seem to use a fine mosquito net its a lot courser than peel ply,ithink they waxed it first.

This sounds interesting. The project has a really light carbon pre-preg skin under the non-slip i.e. likely to dent easily and would benefit from a little more skin thickness.
How do you get a clean finish edge?

I'd say do it like a cut lap on a surfboard,

Mask edge
Apply everything
When its at the stage where you can barely dent it with your fingernail, cut along the tape edge with a razor and remove the tape.
Later when all cured remove the cloth over the resin.

Good video (all the instructionals by this guy area are great). Obviously it s a little different as he's leaving the cloth behind but it shows you the tape n cut process. You'd let it harden a smidge more for your grip though

Mark, That shows you some of the best surfboard laminating and cloth inlay techniques in the making of traditional logs. A great video. Heirloom surfboards may well be a great board to have kind of like an Almond, Bing or Gato Heroi. Thanks for posting.
