This is an interesting sub-thread.
A proper rope won't stretch. For instance a halyard line on a larger sailboat cannot afford to stretch one bit, and it doesn't (noticeably).
Rope must be well-chosen, a good boat shop will know... the ropes (!) and properties: UV, stretch, float, elasticity for moorings, etc. Including bits for old windsurfers.
But if you have to use any old bit lying around, yes the above trick.
And/or, you use the rig for a few minutes on the ground, before going out. Looks crazy, but everybody else does it.
If the tie-on is wrong, it will have moved a bit. Then just re-tighten it, it's quick.
