Hey guys
i have a 150-200 north platinum boom (circa 2011) which is still going strong but the head is showing signs of a few cracks in the plastic. Just wondering if anyone know if the likes of chinook or Goya front ends would fit a north boom? I can easily remove the current head and it has a non curved section at the front - do all booms have this or are some carbon booms curved? Asking as I can find chinook and Goya replacements online but not north

Unfortunately, it advertises only spare parts for 2019 models but these may work better than changing brands. Perhaps you could email them to see if they have the right part for your 2011 boom.

The Duotone front end won't fit a North boom.

but as standard do non-matching booms heads tend to fit other booms?

I think as a rule yes they tend to, there would almost certainly be something else that fits especially as you can play with the plastic shim thickness

b) clearance for the width of frontend (often different from the outside to the inside)
c) curved or straight

and the tolerances are very small so 1mm here and there makes a difference.

A number of measurements jake? only the tube dia at front and if it's straight then something else will fit.

there are a lot of booms that come from same factories rebranded

.. unless the boom starts to curve and the straight section is too narrow

.. unless there are ridges on the boom at either side of the straight section to centre the frontend and this makes the straight section too narrow

.. unless the straight section of the boom is too wide and the frontend is too narrow and the boom slips from side to side

.. unless there is a raised nodule on the boom for alignment with the frontend to ensure the boom does not slip from side to side and this nodule is not compatible with the new frontend

Yes, those unlesses are important, but the main criterion is the tube diameter. Maui Sails and Streamlined (maybe others as well) provide shims to fit their boom heads to different diameters. You gotta do your homework on this one.

As an example, I needed to replace a HPL boom head with one that would fit a RDM mast without a mast shim that always gets lost. Since HPL boom tubes up front measure 37mm diameter, the only boom head that would fit was the Streamlined.

There is no 'main criterion' ... every dimension has to be compatible.

My boom is the perfect diameter for the Streamlined frontend ... but I only have 90mm of a straight section clearance width ... whilst the Streamlined frontend required 105mm width (from memory). It does not fit unfortunately.

How is the Streamlined frontend performing? They look really nice.
