A few steps involving prep work, holding the sail down, pre-taping, etc.
Also include long-term results after use in the waves.

And the culprit white water !
We can see the white water pushing on the board which poked through the bottom panel.
I tried the throw your gear over the wave and pray technique.

I like it.
But much easier to cut a piece of stickyback to the right size.......?
I'd use that good tape of yours if I could not get stickyback though

Nice tape job Manuel7.
Probably a retard question but has anyone attempted any hot air welding of any sort ?
Is it possible or is monofilm supa melt worthy ?

Thats a very good question.

Apparently Polyester film (Mylar) can be welded.

Do any sail makers actually use it in sail construction though? If not, there must be a good reason. I can think if a few,,,,,,

you only need to get a few hot days or leaving the sail rigged in direct sunlight would soften the weld. It would probably last ok as a repair but you couldn't make a sail using that process, the weld is pretty heavy too and these days they try and make the batten pocket and seam together, so you'd need two small welds, one either side of the seam.

Update: After numerous sessions and severe washings, repair is in same shape except that moisture got inside along the tear. I suspect it made its way in on the luff side where the crack meats stitching. However, the tape itself is still sticking the same. Not sure it's worth dabbing some silicone there (not now or when it's fully dry), it'd be nice to a have full dry repair!

Now I've had to patch a few small cracks on the sail itself which is looking a little sad :D !

A good quality (not bunnings) silver tape works better than any sail repair tape i've tried.

stays stuck and strong.

I use a X ply sticky back . It comes 1.2 m wide and buy it by the metre. I think its made in Germany . Once cleaned with acetone it sticks and will never peel. Ever ! I repair as the above vid .
Ive fixed full panel tears , no problem. The stuff is amazing.

Tried to find the tape you were talking about. This is the closest I found. Pattern looks different, but is this the type of tape you mentioned?

Tape letting go is never my problem, its the new tear that happens beside the taped repair that is the problem. Once the monofilm starts getting brittle its only a matter of time before your taping it everytime you use it.
