It's all progressed since I was last in the game. I'm keen to huy a new (second hand sail) for blasting Botany on my 93ltr JP FSW. Looking for a slalom sail but there's too many friggen options and I'm not huying a new mast yet... have a 2-piece carbon. I've got a 5.0 a 5.6 and 6.0, but they're all around 10 years old. I'm looking for something that I can use most of the time. Was out in 20-25kts the other day and my old Sailworks 5.6 slalom seemed kike a good size. Can you experts please explain to me what I should be looking for when purchasing a flat-water (choppy) sail for blasting around botany. Cheers.

Don't think you should mate a slalom sail with an FSW, perhaps something like a Hellcat would be more suitable. IMHO

Ditto what Nick said a crossover sail is what you want for a FSW. Most of them have tube battens like my Gaastra cross and I think the severne gator has them as well. Not sure about the pryde version. Crossover sails are awesome I love mine. They have the grunt of a springy leach wavesail but with a bit more top end + nice and easy to handle. An rdm mast is the go if you can get hold of one.

In 20-25 knots a 5.6m will be plenty. Holding bigger I don't see much point. Have been using a Severne code red 5.6m sail for last 3 years and its awesome. Quite a bit lighter and less rigid despite having 8 battens than other race sails. Luff is 431 cms so a 430 is ok. Cam rotation is another big reason I will not get rid of this sail,it has negligible resistance when rotating. Unlike so many other race sails!

if you can find a 2nd hand NP 5.7 firefly, nice and light and good for blasting around

Can you guys pls dumb it down for me. Do I need something with a short boom,... raf of cam? How many battons etc. Seriously dumb it down. My 5.6 has 3 cams but it sucked waterstaeting after so long...but not too bad. I had to swim up the sail and pop em round then I was good.

mate i have a 93 litre Jp FSW and the type of sail that best suits that board is a wave sail or freestyle ( No cams ) with 5 battens , my favorite sail on this board is a 5.4 with a max of 6.4 .

I have north gear and use a duke , get on the North web site and see what im talking about then pick the same thing made by the brand of mast you already have.

You will get lots of different answers. I would have thought any modern free ride sail would be the go. I think you are on the money with size 5.6 to 6. I also have jp fsw 93, I run a 5.3 and 6.6 free ride (loft oxygen or 02) 6.6 is a little big, would stay under 6ish

Mast? I've got an old carbon job. Baby steps mate. I've got a 2010 JP 93ltr fsw. Just want a good sail and don't mind a few creases. Mast comes after sail. Can you guys point me to a second hand job in the forums.

second hand job

If you get a wave/crossover sail then you could consider a reduced diameter mast as well.
It won't necessarily visually rig better although will (theoretically) be more efficient so better
wind range & more control.

Something 5.3 - 5.8. If you get a 400 mast then should rig on 4.7-5.8.

Match mast to sail, if you want to check mast compatibility check this:

Ezzy panther (wave) or cheetah. No cam, great handling, soft ride, non technical, very durable. The cheetah is the best no-cam sail on the market.

Windsurfing sails are cut to fit a certain bending curve . Unlike yachts masts which use a combination of stays ( back , side , diamond, and front ) boom vang cunnigham to shape the mast therefore shaping the sail . A WS has only the down haul so its important that the mast / sail are compatible .

Important but not critical bit like buying a V8 and only using 6 cylinders . Does your old carbon mast have a brand name still on it ?

here something like this you mentioned botany bay so I'm assuming you are from NSW so i did a quick scroll and found this assuming your mast is compatible ie constant curve this will be perfect .

Thanks ggh.

Ive got a sailworks 5.6 syncro... boom = 182 and luff 451.

My mast is a 2 piece Powerex 3300. I think its 30% carbon. Anyone know whether the mast is any good/still current for use with modern sails? I've got no idea how old it is, but it seems they're still making them.

Yer that should be fine, powerex to my knowledge is constant curve so either the Ezzy panther or North duke will be good . Don't buy Neil Pryde .

Severne Gator

HSM Superfreak - don't laugh people don't laugh. Strongest most durable sail in the world. Stronger more durable than an Ezzy

Both should rig on a powerex
