I have bought two Neil Pryde MXT extenders and bases. When I rig my larger sails (+8,6) I find it hard to trim the downhaul
Do anyone have a suggestion of a downhaul crank/tool/winch that is compatible?

Winch + uxt/mxt adapter

(But be aware, that pin hole -plastic inside uxt/mxt adapter will crack after some time,just like in all euro pin extension.Too much side force because rope is not in line with center of hole...)



Or put harness on your back and push with leg instead pull with hands, on sails with stiffer masts and greater luff curve.

This is the best piece of equipment I have ever purchased, got a new sail the other day and the downhaul pulley is separated in 2 by some webbing so couldn't use it and used a standard extension instead after using the standard extension only then did i realise just how easy and effortless the XT extension is.

and bonus is not having to sit in the wet grass/sand to release downhaul !
won't use anything else !

Also, the winch shown in Turn Back Times photo, MIGHT be a universal type, used on MXT and UXT systems (look closely at the cutouts on the side of the tool which may suit the MXT). Perhaps others can comment?

It will not fit into mxt extension,you must put adapter.I had it.I doubt your chinook will fit ,because it looks similar cutouts.

Yup!! Totally has made slalom sailing a breeze!

Also makes you tune the sail on a whim with each click giving you a measurable idea of where you are downhaul wise rather than pulling and not knowing exactly. My back has thanked me for this! Only issue is you do need to keep spare parts on had as the leaf spring can be damaged and the rachet pin wears. I have a few generations which I rebuild to keep things going. The old ones if you went to release downhaul tended to let a bunch go at a time, great for derigging, but not so much for adjustment. The new ones are much better for this, but derigging can be tedious....but well worth this slight bother!

It will not fit into mxt extension,you must put adapter.I had it.I doubt your chinook will fit ,because it looks similar cutouts.

Fits in fine - just don't use the pin end use the tube end up the extension, use mine all the time.

Got he Chinook winch today and can sadly inform that it doesn't fit directly into the MXT-fitting. I bought an MXT-UXT adapter so now I can use winch.
My new racing sails has 4 rolls, so I probably will buy new extenders anyway.

Sorry to say that it does NOT fit. The MXT fitting differs from the winch. It I take the non-pin side, it will fit into the extender, but the crank will be to close to the cleat (and wrong angle).

try doing a marlin spike and using a screw driver.

Basically rig up the down haul and pass the rope through the cleats etc.

Sit on the floor and with the rope coming out of the cleat make a number 6, now holding the loop, flip it upwards, pass a screw driver through the loop with the under string on the under side and now put a bit of pressure on the driver, the loop thing should tighten onto the screw driver, now put your foot on the base of the extension and using both hand, one either side of the screw driver, pull it whilst stretching out your leg and then cleat off, now heres the clever part, pull the screw driver out pull the single bit of role and the knot should come clean out.

I hacked my Chinook downhaul winch to fit the MXT extensions I use. I effectively cut a slot in part of it so that it would fit in and I have been using it for quite a few years now.

The crime is that the original MXT extensions had the cleat lined up perfectly for this use, and then the next NP version had the rope in the cleat going off at 90 degrees, which makes it difficult to cleat off. I wonder why some idiot did this as it was perfect the way it was.

Same here FormulaNova. I replaced my old MXT's with the newer version and they are unusable with my winch. The Formuline rope drags against the cleat teeth causing it to wear out. Plus it was a nightmare to cleat the rope off.

I ended up selling the newer MXT's at a lose. I hadn't got round to selling my old set of MXT's (glad I didn't), so I'm back using my old ones. It took me ages to find an extension brand that actually worked 100% with my winch, so currently buying up all 2nd hand old style MXT extensions. I have six so far, so should be several years before I have to find another compatible brand:)
