Heading to Naxos in early September and will be hiring gear from Flisvos Sports Club. I am wondering if we should pre-book the gear for 5 days (and receive a discount and guaranteed to have gear) or just hire day to day if there is wind so to avoid forking out if there is no wind.
Anyone been there at a similar time? How much gear do they have? Any advice welcome.

I've been there at that time and it was very windy. My 4.7m was far too big (95kgs). I had my own gear but my brother rented from Naxos Surf Club. The guys there are great and there was plenty of choice for a day here or there. We also sailed at on the west side close to Naxos Kitesurf Club, side shore and flat. Beach and location far nice there than in the lagoon which is a little silty (sail through a gap in the rocks to get into the big wind swells). Either spot, it's great!

I have been to Naxos on a regular basis in summer since 1987. Wind statistics show that chances are good for planing winds.
But: beginning of September can be anything from a week of howling thirty knots plus winds to no wind at all.
Most likely you will happily roam through their Neil Pryde and RRD gear which they have plenty of ( I think they even still have a Starboard Gemini and two Catamarans).
The Meltemi is the prevailing northerly wind, but at the end of summer southerlies can kick in which usually aren't strong enough to be sailed. Then the two systems struggle for power and you're caught in no wind for days.
The lagoon where Flisvos is located is a great flatwater spot, the adjacent wave spot seems to work as an onshore wave spot after at least three very strong days to build up a decent wave. I've always been disappointed with it, though.

Both have a flipside: When the Meltemi isn't strong enough, they tend to end up in the lulls while in Mikri Vigla further south you can already blast. It's a rather choppy bump and jump place. Flisvos have a rental there as well, but only for kite gear as far as I know. There is another windsurf rental there.

Why am I telling you this?

I wouldn't put all eggs in one basket, you'd better rent on a daily basis and travel south on weaker days. Consecutive days with no wind at all have been rare over the last years, so statistically are ripe, but on these you can hire a mountainbike from Flisvos and explore the beaches further north or log a few metres of altitude: You can ride all the way to the summit of Mt. Koronos (almost 1000m) if you brace yourself for gnarly farm dogs on too long leashes!

A long time ago a friend of mine managed to rent for ten days with only two hours of wind at the lagoon, probably a record unbeaten!
The poor bastard didn't have any idea of what to do alternatively!

Good idea! From all I know, they've always shown to be rather flexible, so I guess you'll be fine.

I have been to Naxos 4 or 5 times, and always rented from Naxos Surf Center, which is the center run by Antonis in the lagoon. For me it has a better position compared to Flisvos in terms of how the wind blows there. He is the owner and not the nicest guy on earth, but he's definetly a correct person and by the way seldom at the center. The guys running it day by day are very helpful and nice. All in all I prefer it compared to Flisvos. I found Mikri Vigla too choppy for my level (intermediate). Plaka beach, one of the nicest beaches, has another center but the wind is often weaker there. At the South end of Plaka there is a spot perfect for slalom, but no center there though.

...which is also why it's so damn exciting when it is finally "on". Damn, fickle sport.
