I use a severne blueline 430 mast SDM.

The batten above the boom won't rotate- too tight. We've taken the cam out and filed it a bit so the batten goes in further but that is limited as any more filing and you'd use the lip that stops the batten..As you can see I have no batten tension and yet it won't rotate properly - stiff as hell..





What sort of cams do they have as default? Are there supposed to be 2 types? The boom height one is like this below - big with rollers and rotates well ( except the batten is too short and was broken so that"s a separate problem I will fix).Note how the cam isn't sitting up to the batten- is it normal for that to happen when the sail is loose ( no downhaul / outhaul..) This is one of the reasons why I got into trouble judging what length to cut things..- I didn't realise it was like this with that gap. I pushed it on properly earlier but you can see its come off again.. Closer pic last one..

The problem one above the boom ( won't rotate- too tight) is this below ..



Just about had this- if It wasn't for the fact that it will be such a great sail fixed I'd chuck it..

Looks like SDM cams to me, at least the black one.
Have you tried an SDM mast already?

I could be wrong .. ..but the red top cam looks similar to my naish boxer cam ..which is made for a RDM mast ..that's why it might be longer .

It could be you have two different types of cams on ..that why its too tight and no rotation

i know some where supply with two types of cams ...some for RDM mast and some for SDM.

did you fully down haul the sail.with all the cams in ?as the bend in the mast might make a different s for the top cam.

Sue if it turns around they're the wrong cams, I have a few spare Maui SDM cams you can try.

Hey Sue, I have a Naish Grand Prix (7.0) which seems to have the same mix of cams as yours. The black one at mast height appears to fit comfortably with an Sdm mast whilst the two red ones above and below it (it's a 3 cam sail) appear to be rfm cams. When I first rigged it (on Sdm) I couldn't get the cams to rotate properly. an extra 1.0 cm of downhaul though and they were moving much better ( 1.0 cm more than printed on the sail) I had to play around a bit with cam spacers ( 2 extras at the boom and 1 above) To get the tension just right, but appears to be working well now. The cams pop straight off the front and the spacers go back on the batten end before putting the cam back on.
im sure the red ones are stil RDM but they seem to stay put and rotate ok on the Sdm mast as tuned above.

Waiting on feedback from Naish stockists.Something wrong-mast / cams...problem is I need to fix the batten before I can sort out sail setting.

Thanks.What mast do you use? Are severne blue line compatible? I thought Naish were hardtop like Severne.I think I've taken all the spacers out.I often have to do that to makerotation easier .I'm a lightweight and not very strong.

Thanks James! Mmm I think its weird to have 2 different types of cams.. but if the Grand Prix do...?? I tried to find some pics on Google but found plenty of nice sailing video but no diagrams of the cams etc..

Sue I am using an old North Sdm, Nash are only just off the centreline of Constant curve on the uni fibre chart. The Severne should match nicely.

Luckily I've got a 430 Sailworks CC mast I can try with it so when I get the batten fixed I'll try both and see if it makes any difference. The previous owner ran it on a CC RDM mast. I'd read that Severne masts were ok with Naish so just went down that road. Mainly because my severne mast was higher carbon ( lighter) than the sailworks one.

Sell the Naish sail and buy a Ka Koncept , solve the problem

Sounds good Sue, I'm a worthy cause so just donate it to me I'll fix it.

Sail is fantastic I would take to JB at Windgunity and I am sure he will sort it out quick.
Keep the sail they RIP. All the cams are correct.
Back up the batton tension and adjust to fit the blue line mast but the bend curve could be a problem??
They do rig on a constant curve mast so I hope blue line is CC.

Sue, the Severne SDM masts are much thicker above the Boom than the Naish SDMs which reduce to be almost RDM at the point where your top cam sits. Both Simon Fyfe [at Board Crazy] have tried the Severne Mast in Naish sails of different types, [Slalom, RAF Slalom & Wave] & found they are to thick, wont rotate properly & also flex curve is not the same, can't get the leach to lay off properly. Extra downhaul above spec 2-4cms helps in most cases as well.

If the sailworks mast doesn't work could you change the cam above the mast to one like the boom height one ( bigger / wider) and add downhaul to help fix it?

I rigged the sail in Simon Fyfe's shop with the mast and checked the rotation before buying the sail in early 2014. The SDM cams worked well with the RDM mast. The sail rotated well. This was the setup you saw I used at Lake George in Feb 2015. Do you have a constant curve 430 RDM mast to try?

Yep a sailworks 430. I'll take it down to the shop and get them to try it.
I know you told me you had been using a CC mast but I had read they were compatible with Severne ( obviously wrong from the feedback here) and wanted to use that as it was a lighter mast and meant I didn't have to carry as many with me.Lesson learnt..

Hey Sue, I decided to check my 7.0 Grand Prix as it is a bit tight to rotate. I found the middle cam had no rollers at all (standard) so I modified a Severne one I had and it's adifferent sail altogether. Super smooth now, all I need is 30 knots to test it lol.
