I've had one of these now for a few months. First PFD I've bought and used. Checked out feedback here on SB before choosing it. Comments on here were that they don't ride up. What am I doing wrong? I can't stop the bloody thing riding up. I'm sick of having the top of the thing pushing up under my throat the whole time while sailing. Is it an option to secure the thing to my harness? I use a seat harness and the bottom of the vest happily contours at the back, fitting in perfectly with the top of my harness before setting off. I want to keep using it. Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

Yep same as that and yes I am dumber than I thought, haven't been putting the hook through there, derrrrrrrr. I'll give that a go tomorrow, cheers for that.

Mines black and works fine.

you can put the hook through the loop but might increase the height of the hook (i.e. pull it up) at the same time as pulling the vest down.

Do you have the adj buckles on either side tight? not too tight cos you need to be able to breath.

Im going to try a waist harness tomorrow. Been in a seat one for about 15yrs. It will probably ride up!

Here in S.A. If you're not in the surf, wearing one will save you about $250 every time the revenue collection department drive past and possibly your life if you get KOed by an out of control tea bag

If no other point, inland lakes are often owned by federal or local agency's. The rules vary, most require a float coat, life jacket. They don't check if it's coast guard approved, just that your wearing one.

I decided to get one to help me water start with big cambered sails

So the rules are stupid is my point. Even in flat water a life jacket is more dangerous than not wearing one. Many a time, when I was learning to sail, I found myself in the water under the sail, A life jacket would make it harder to swim slightly down and out of that situation

The other reason I bought one is that the Govts won't cull the crocs until a couple of kids get taken from their doorstep in suburbia so I'm hoping if ol' croc happens to have me for lunch when I'm out there he'll choke on the bloody thing

I have an np high hook pfd and seat harness. I also found the pfd wanted to ride up and choke me, and that the harness wanted to move down away from my ample gut. No problem, I had my local sailmaker sew in two plastic clips on the side of the pfd allowing me to attach the pfd to the harness through one of the many anchor points by way of a separate piece of webbing for each clip. Now both stay where I want them.

Furthermore, they protect your ribs, keep you warm, make treading water easier and have pocket to put your key in. On the downside, they can feel bulky, but you can get used to that.

Mandatory in some places..Also helps waterstarting, warmer in winter and cushions you if go splat on the boom at speed..

Yeah I think I'm going to have to go for a solution like that. Tried Joe Wondsurf's suggestion today but I don't want the hook that high.

This may or may not help. Pro limit seat harness with NP High Hook, like Joe's pic. Found the high hook vest slipping inside the back of the harness when up hauling and pumping. Solution was to have a local sail maker make some old school thin shoulder straps and shock cord which stopped the vest pushing between the top of the harness and my back.

Looking at one aspect , of course you have a point . Authorities would look at the possibility of being saved by the use of one versus not wearing one.
this applies more so in extreme conditions , as in someone is unconsious or Incapacited.

dangerous, hardly think so

^ If you're unconscious you float face down in any but the the big ones with collars (type 1?) required for offshore use.
I guess type 3s make it easier to recover the body though. :/
A 2 or 3 will certainly help to keep you afloat for a long time without much effort. I guess that's the goal.
