Have recently with the aid of some tape been combing different top and bottom sections of masts. My latest effort is the bottom section of a 400cm Severne blue line with the top section of a old Arrows 490 race mast that had 20cms chopped off it. It now measures around 455 cms. Not had the chance to use it yet on my 7m Warp but hoping it will help in rotation of cams. Previously combined the top section of a Powerex 430 with the bottom of a X9 wave 430. Only tried it once and seemed to work ok. The bottom section seems to be the key for cam rotation from my experience. Too stiff will result in cams sticking and may rig too full? The top section I like to have stiff, for increased leech tightness, which results in a more powerful sail and usually better upwind.

Its interesting what happens when you interchange different tips and bases.

I was playing around with my Ezzy masts, and they recommend the tip is always longer or equal to the base, and it seems to work this way.

Just for fun I tried a longer base with a shorter tip, and that completely stuffed up the bend curve and the way the sails rigged. Completely unusable, as there was too much pressure on the lower section, and the cams had no chance of rotating.

I say, go for it, and you never know how it could work.

I am guessing, a really wild guess, that the stiffer top will tighten the leech and take a lot of load off the cams.
