Whilst at my local sailing spot a week or so ago, a friend took some photos of a newbie getting nailed in some mild conditions.

Have some fun and see if you can guess the damage sustained to the gear (please don't spoil the fun if you know)

Sorry .. no prize apart from fame.

Awesome photo series . Caption comp #101?

What's the time gap between shots? Is that the fastest ever voluntary dismount that I see there between pic 1 and 2?

hm... I actually got sucked back-up into a wave not dis-similar to this one at said spot last year... what worse, it was with a mates brand new board and sail.

surprisingly nothing got damaged (including myself).

another mate of mine made the same mistake on his first wave... he got away with a half hour swim and a broken mast.

As for the photos I am guessing... mast and sail...

BTW, this is a classic mistake at your local spot. Someone told me when it gets to this size you need to line up you take off with a certain rock on the beach.

C'mon Loz..."a friend"? "a newbie"! Just admit it was you bailing in the 2nd shot and we can stop playing these mind games, and get you some professional help with your shame issues.

There is a reason it is called tombstones

I reckon mast is good cos it was parallel to the wave so would not have been driven into the reef.

I call sail panel only

Looks like he was heading in... not out... before he got taken out !
*Based purely on the tack he is sailing on

EDIT

Damage estimate

2 x panels blown
1 x batten snapped
1 x box of the worlds most expensive beer to share with his mates !

Amazingly the only damage was a 200m swim & a broken batten. We couldn't believe it. We fully expected broken masts, sails..but nup .. a batten .. sorry don't know which one. :-)

The photo relli posted was post-prang.

And yeah .. he wasn't a newbie, but the famed dreadlock toting "Corey" who was a standout superstar all day, doing some wild poop. Scotty McKercher also made an appearance and was also awesome to watch.

Here he is early in the day on a bigger sail, before changing up:
