Can anyone suggest a good cheap option for mini van hire on Maui ? Have just been through the whole booking thing for a quoted price then discovered $400 in extras and extra driver an other $150 and the list goes on.

www.rentalcars.com/au/

I have recently booked a Mini Van through this site for Maui, what I liked is that you can see all the costs up front so you wont get screwed over at the rental counter.
You can always get a beat up bomb from Al West but I found they were not very easy to communicate with and not much cheaper than a near new van when you shop around. Having said that I know plenty who like using Al West but I know a few who had some problems with there vans.

Yeah seems like most are happy with them but from my point is that it was my 1st time booking a car in Maui and they replied to one email and could not be bothered replying to a couple of simple questions we had so I thought stuff them I will rent from someone else, and glad we did as my mates vans were a bit dodgy with 1 having no hand brake and the other with such a sand blasted wind screen he had trouble driving at night!

we recently used kimos and it was cheap, but it wasn't all good;

-the gas tank was bone dry
-we collected the van from the public parking lot and had to pay the parking fee to get out
- it was raining and when i turned on the windshield wipers one of them fell off. i contacted kimos and was told "sorry for your bad luck"
-we had a couple of warning lights constantly on; "don't worry about that..."

when i called again for drop off instructions i was told to leave $10 under the seat for parking.

i reckon we were mostly unlucky, i would probably rent from them again.

Al West were ok. I think I'd probably rent from somewhere else next time though as we really couldn't drive safely at night due to our windscreen. Brakes were decent...just.

I've found that in Maui, the standard of cars in general is quite a bit lower than what most of us would be accustomed to. Who ever you book with, there will be some element of adventure.

+1 kimosrentacar

Never had a problem but expectation has always been based on price... you pay for what you get.

They have three (3) options.. Older Newer Premium and they are priced accordingly IE Cheap Mid Price More

Had no problems collecting car from Airport and dropped it back at Kimos where one of the guys simply jumped in and drove us in the car to the airport so we didn't have to double handle boards and luggage

Expect the car to have limited fuel in it when you pick it up but there's plenty of petrol stations within 3 to 5 min of the airport.
Most of all it's Maui, chill out and go with it... they tell me it's an aloha thing !

Thanks for the replies. I initially booked with Dollar with the quoted price of $600 for the 15 days but after confirming the rental they wanted another $300 plus $12 a day for additional driver taking the whole thing past $1000, so I got out of that one and have gone with Kimos for $490 and no additional driver fee for the same period, the cars may not be as new and there may be a few issues but I am sure they can be sorted.

I went to Maui last year and hired a van-can't remember name of company- beware in the small print we discovered we were not allowed to go beyond Hana nor were we supposed to go off road which technically ruled out Sprecks. I say technically as we went anyway
